Moštenica – Travertine Terraces and Hiking in the Low Tatras

Moštenica lies on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras and combines a forested landscape with a natural monument, mineral spring, hiking route and remarkable cultural and historical traces. The village is a starting point for the ridge of the Low Tatras and is therefore particularly well suited to a trip where landscape and regional history are closely connected.

Travertine Landscape and Mineral Spring

Among the most striking natural areas are the Moštenické travertíny. The area is a protected natural monument in the cadastral territory of Moštenica and lies within the protected zone of a national park. The travertine complex forms an approximately 500-metre-long cascade with six levels. Its elevation lies roughly between 650 and 800 metres. At the Moštenické travertíny, an active travertine terrace with five water outlets is also protected.

The area is used for recreation, but is accessible neither via a hiking trail nor an educational trail. This distinction is important for orientation on site: the travertines are an independent natural point of interest, but not a visitor attraction developed as a hiking or educational trail. A recreational centre developed around the Moštenická kyslá mineral spring, adding another special point of interest to the landscape character of the village.

Hiking Route to Hiadeľské sedlo

For a longer mountain hike, the documented route from Moštenica via the Uhliarska Valley, Moštenická Kyslá, Zubová, Hadlanka and Kozí chrbát to Hiadeľské sedlo is an option. The stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route connects the village with several named landscape features and leads to a saddle in the Low Tatras area.

Church, Crafts and Historical Traces

Traditional household production in Moštenica included woodworking and linen weaving. These references to former everyday life stand alongside several cultural and historical sites. The cemetery contains the graves of fallen partisans. Near the former lime kiln stands a monument to murdered Hungarian soldiers and a civilian victim.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a Neoclassical church built in 1846–1847. Its main altar features a crucifixion painting created in 1846 by J. B. Klemens. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose. Another historical point of interest is the former mining office, a Renaissance building erected in 1561 with a U-shaped floor plan. The building is also remembered as the site of a military hospital during the Slovak National Uprising.

Hradište adds an even older chapter to the history of the village. It is the site of a hilltop settlement from the Late and Final Bronze Age, which was fortified by a presumably existing ditch. A cremation burial of the Lusatian culture was also found near Hradište. The documented sites thus span prehistoric traces, mining and wartime history, church architecture and traditional crafts.
