Povrazník: Trails, Poľana and Rural Cultural Heritage

Povrazník combines the landscape of the Poľana with an unusually vivid village history. The cadastral territory belongs to the Poľana Biosphere Reserve, whose mountain range is considered the highest and best-preserved volcanic mountain range in Slovakia. The volcanic cave Ďuríkova diera is located nearby. Povrazník is also known among mineralogists for deposits of wood opals, which formed during volcanic activity near the Poľana. The surrounding area is considered a popular mushroom-picking region.

Hiking and cycling with clear differences

When choosing a suitable route, Povrazník offers two distinctly different hiking experiences. The marked route from Na Mincu over the main ridge of the Poľana to Detva is 25 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 860 metres and is considered challenging. The unmarked route through Driekyňa from Povrazník, on the other hand, is 5 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 130 metres and is considered easy.

Cycling also offers a choice ranging from a shorter route to an extended loop. The cycling route from Povrazník to Slovenská Ľupča is 10 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 80 metres and is considered easy. The green cycling route No. 5551 runs around the Poľana, is 122 kilometres long and is considered challenging. A bus connection with Banská Bystrica is also among Povrazník’s documented features for regional orientation.

Mining, crafts and traditional village history

The history of Povrazník is closely linked to mining. The inhabitants specialised in making ropes and supplied them mainly to the mines of Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Staré Hory. Below Brezina on the road to Majer stand three large rocks, each weighing about one tonne and containing centrally positioned holes approximately 15 to 20 centimetres in diameter. Stakes were fastened there; long bundles of hemp fibres were twisted from rock to rock and braided into ropes used to lower miners into the pits.

The first written mention of Povrazník dates from 22 May 1424. At that time, the settlement was listed as Powraznik among the villages of the Ľupča estate. Linen and rag rugs were still being woven here until the middle of the 20th century. The traditional costume also preserves a regional affiliation: it belongs to the Poniky variant of the Detva costume type.

Bell tower, museum and preserved architectural heritage

One of the notable cultural and historical monuments is the bell tower of Povrazník. Its ground floor is masonry, while the upper floor is built using a wooden post-and-beam structure with plank cladding. The tower contains a small bell from 1745 and a large bell from 1792. A memorial plaque to General Dr M. R. Štefánik was unveiled on the bell tower in 1928.

The municipal museum of Povrazník opened in 2008. It contains restored exhibits collected mainly by local residents. The collection includes a room dedicated to folk traditions, a classroom, and a collection of televisions and radios. Several wooden log houses and original ethnographic artefacts have also been preserved in the village. Log house No. 59 dates from 1880 and is registered as a cultural monument.
