Horné Pršany: Kremenia, Educational Trails and Culture

Horné Pršany brings together natural history, marked trails and historical evidence within a compact thematic area. The main attractions are the protected natural monument of Kremenia, two educational trails with different focuses, destinations in the Kremnica Mountains and several reminders of the municipality’s history. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Slovakia where the landscape and culture can be explored through specific points of interest, you will find a range of corresponding starting points here.

Kremenia and the route to the viewpoint

In Horné Pršany, Kremenia is a protected natural monument of geological and geomorphological value. Its varied surface formations and outcrops make the processes of silicification observable. The area’s distinctive relief is associated with the transformation of the original limestone and dolomite rocks into siliceous rock. This has resulted in clearly pronounced rocky ridges, whose edges often form rock cliffs; isolated smaller rock towers can also be found. The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” educational trail ends at this natural monument, where there are interesting caves.

The “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa” educational trail offers a different perspective. It ends below the summit of Lažtek Hill in the Kopanice locality. An observation tower stands there, offering views of the surrounding area. The educational trail has four stations providing information about the historical and natural features of the municipality and its surroundings. It also presents information about tourism opportunities in this part of the Kremnica Mountains. The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” educational trail also has four stations; they focus on the history of Horné Pršany and its points of interest.

Getting There and Mountain Routes

Horné Pršany is a terminal municipality and can be reached by bus from the Radvaň-Kráľová district of Banská Bystrica via Pršianska terasa. From the bus stop in Horné Pršany, marked tourist signs lead to the Kremenia Cave. The route takes approximately 20 minutes from the municipality. This specific orientation is particularly relevant for visitors who would like to combine access to the cave with a stay in the village.

Marked hiking trails from Horné Pršany lead to various destinations in the Kremnica Mountains, including Tri kríže and Králiky, and possibly as far as Kremnica. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails run along the marked hiking trail network. This should be distinguished from the “Trasa L – Králiky – Horné Pršany” cross-country route, which ends above Horné Pršany. A specific cycling connection is also documented: a bicycle route connects Malachov and Horné Pršany.

Historical Traces and Local Traditions

The municipality’s historical sites include the bell tower in Horné Pršany. Its tower contains a late Baroque bell dating from 1757. Its creator is unknown; the bell is a cultural monument. Another historical trace is located in the Hrádok locality, where a settlement of the Lusatian Urnfield culture was discovered. From Horné Pršany, visitors can reach the Medzihrádky (Hrádok) locality via a field path passing by the sheepfold. Archaeological research was carried out there in the past.

The documented Fašiangy celebrations are also part of the town’s traditional cultural history. During the documented Fašiangy, the song “Šikovný čardáš” was played. According to the description, it has no lyrics and was not played anywhere else in Slovakia. A historical description also reports that the celebrations began around noon on Sunday with five male participants in traditional dress. The documented Fašiangy ended at midnight on Tuesday with the burial of the double bass. Thus, alongside the landscape routes, local customs and historical depictions also stand as independent themes.
