Rybany – Circular Village, Bebrava Riverbank and Cultural Monuments

Rybany reveals its character in two ways: the village lies on the left bank of the Bebrava River while also preserving an unusual historic layout. Rybany can be reached via Road II/592 and the Trenčín–Chynorany railway line.

A Square with a Special Layout

Rybany preserves the layout of its square as a circular village with an ear-shaped extension. The name draws attention to the square’s distinctive shape, which was not replaced here by a modern, schematic layout. The ear-shaped extension broadens the square to the side and forms part of the preserved historic layout. The preserved historic plot division, with narrow, elongated plots, is another feature. Those interested in organically developed village landscapes will find a concrete point of reference here, allowing them to perceive Rybany not merely as a name on a map, but as a spatially legible place.

This layout includes preserved residential houses arranged perpendicular to the square. Their façades display Classicist and Secessionist elements of regional architecture. It is precisely this combination of plots, orientation and façade design that makes the square an ensemble of different historical layers. A traditional folk costume is also part of Rybany’s preserved cultural heritage, complementing the built environment with a living expression of local tradition.

Church and Chapel as Sacred Heritage

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary contains a late Baroque altar from the 18th century. It includes a painting of the Assumption of Mary and a smaller Pietà statue. The church tower also houses a bell from 1519. The altarpiece and the smaller Pietà represent two different forms of artistic expression within the late Baroque furnishings: painting and sculpture. Together, these details lead from the Baroque furnishings to a single, clearly dated testimony from the early 16th century.

Another focal point is the Snímania z kríža cemetery chapel. It stands in the cemetery of Rybany and is registered as a national cultural monument under number 12135/1. The building is a late Baroque sacred structure from the 18th century. On the outside, it has a rounded end and a small roof turret with a gabled roof; inside, it has a ribbed vault.

The chapel’s furnishings also bear a mark of time. An altar of the Descent from the Cross dating from the late 19th century is documented inside it for the year 1969. The late Baroque classification therefore refers to different levels: in the church, it applies to the altar, while in the cemetery chapel, it applies to the building itself.
