Veľké Chlievany – Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Veľké Chlievany
Veľké Chlievany can be explored through two distinct themes: the landscape around Inovec and a local history with tangible cultural landmarks. The slope and stream place the village in its setting; the church, memorial plaque, park and museum each offer a different perspective on its heritage. For your trip planning, this brings together a clear picture of the landscape, architectural history and local remembrance.
Landscape around Inovec
The village lies in the Bánovce foothills of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, a loess hill landscape, on the right-hand slope of the lower course of the Inovec stream. The Inovec watercourse flows through Veľké Chlievany. It is helpful to distinguish between the two features for orientation: the hillside location describes the landscape setting, while the stream runs through the village. If you choose destinations based on specific landscape features, two clearly identifiable elements come together here: hills and a watercourse. This makes it easier to pinpoint the location than relying on the village name alone.
Church and local history
The first written mention of Veľké Chlievany dates from 1276. The village’s history includes the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, which is among the national cultural monuments in the municipality’s cadastral area. A new church was built in Veľké Chlievany at the expense of Count Gašpar Ilešházy. These bring together three distinct historical points of reference: an early written mention, protected monument status and a specific building history.
Another historical trace leads to Juraj Palkovič (24 April 1763–21 January 1835), who was from the village and was the first to translate the Bible into Bernolák Slovak. A memorial plaque was unveiled in his honour in Veľké Chlievany. Juraja Palkoviča Park was established in 1968 to mark his 205th birthday. This name therefore brings together biographical remembrance, public recognition and the story of the park’s creation.
Múzeum Veľké Chlievany is associated with the birthplace of PhDr. Cyril Marián Guniš. The house, built in 1890, was reconstructed for use as a museum; the reconstruction was completed in 2023. The building thus has a clearly defined construction date and a museum purpose. For travellers interested in culture, it adds another biographical thread to the church’s history and the remembrance of Palkovič.
Park and local traditions
Juraja Palkoviča Park has a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness area and several benches for resting. This combination sets the park apart from the historical landmarks associated with the church: here, the focus is on play, exercise and taking a break. This can help you choose if you are weighing cultural history against time outdoors.
Local traditions can also be placed in time. The Shrovetide tradition was maintained for ten years, up to 2020; the evening included “Pochovávanie basy” (the symbolic burial of the double bass). In addition, “Stavanie mája” (Maypole raising) events were held in Veľké Chlievany in 2018 and 2019. These two details offer insight into different occasions in the local festival culture: Shrovetide and its evening custom, and the Maypole events.
