Šípkov: Karst Educational Trail, Hrádok and Cultural Landscape

Šípkov combines a distinctive karst educational trail with natural surroundings and small cultural landmarks located close to one another. If you are looking for a place where the landscape, medieval traces and village traditions can be experienced in different ways, Šípkov offers several specific points of interest: the Slatinský kras educational trail, the Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site, Hrádok above the village and various monuments in the village.

The Slatinský kras Educational Trail

The Slatinský kras educational trail runs from Krásna Ves via Bukovinská skala, Veľké lúky, Lažtek and Lupenice to a crossroads above Šípkov, and continues to Slatina nad Bebravou. Its character is defined by karst terrain without surface water or drinking water. This makes the route clearly different from simple walks through a landscape with a continuous water supply. Several points along the educational trail offer views of the Strážovské vrchy mountains and the Upper Nitra Basin. The route therefore combines an easily understood course with geological features and expansive views of the landscape.

The Strážovské vrchy Natural Area

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site also includes the cadastral territory of Šípkov. It consists predominantly of forest and rocky habitats and thus shapes the landscape surrounding the village. The area is important for the breeding of birds of prey and owls; the species mentioned include the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and the Eurasian pygmy owl (Aegolius funereus). Those interested in the natural side of Slovakia will therefore find here not only a hiking route but also a clearly designated habitat of particular importance for birdlife.

Hrádok and Historical Traces

Hrádok above Šípkov is a ruined castle dating from the 13th to the 14th century. It is one of the fortifications located on the summits of small hills. Hrádok was dominated by a stone tower with a footprint of 6 × 6 metres. From Šípkov, it can be reached on foot via a forest path in approximately 5 to 10 minutes; the walk is easy. This makes it possible to combine the historical site with a short walk from the village without requiring an extended hike.

Traces of the region’s architectural and commemorative culture can also be found in Šípkov itself. Traditional folk architecture has been preserved, including typical rural settlement forms known as “houses with height”. The Šípkov belfry contains an old Baroque bell from the workshop of Ján Ernest Christelly, a bell founder from Trnava. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a sight in the village; it stands in the centre of Šípkov, north of the municipal office.

Several memorial sites complete this picture. The monument near the Lupenica sheepfold commemorates 22 people who were executed in November 1944. A monument to the victims of the SNP stands to the left of the Šípkov municipal office. Another monument to the victims of the SNP is located on the main road opposite house no. 181.
