Cycling routes between villages and the Považský Inovec
The route Okolo Považského Inovca runs between Čuklasovce and Zlatníky through Dolné Držkovce. Another described cycling route runs from Bánovce nad Bebravou to the Považský Inovec via Horné (Veľké) Držkovce and Čuklasovce. This route includes paved roads as well as field and forest paths; it is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. When choosing, you can therefore consider whether you are looking for a connection through Dolné Držkovce or a route via Horné (Veľké) Držkovce and Čuklasovce.History of Dolné Držkovce
Dolné Držkovce has been mentioned as the settlement of Filips since 1232. The place was a curial village of the noble Držkovský family, also known by the name forms Drskóczy and Draskóczi. Viticulture is documented there for the 16th and 17th centuries. Potter and furrier families are also recorded for 1673. These details paint a picture of a community shaped by crafts and agriculture that goes beyond the mere year of its first mention. Several figures from Slovak history are associated with Dolné Držkovce. The brothers Ľudovít and Mikuláš Dohnány were associates of Ľudovít Štúr and were born in the former manor complex of Dolné Držkovce. A memorial plaque on the former notary's office commemorates the two brothers as well as Karol Kmeťko. Kmeťko was born in Dolné Držkovce in 1875 and later became Archbishop of Nitra. Ján Morvay, a follower of the Bernolák movement, was also born there. In 1831, he translated and published a Slovak guide against cholera.Churches and chapels
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Dolné Držkovce was built in 1931. It is a single-nave sacred building in the historicist style with a straight-ended presbytery and a tower positioned at the corner of the building. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose. Its design therefore provides a clear architectural reference point within the local history. In Horné Držkovce, the chapel was built in 1900 by the noble Krejči family in gratitude for their daughter's recovery. In 2007, it was extended and comprehensively renovated. Veľké Držkovce is also home to the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It contains a Stations of the Cross with wood-carved stations by local woodcarver Karol Praženec. The chapels thus represent different forms of local remembrance: personal gratitude, religious expression, and craft tradition.Local tradition and regional cuisine
Držkovská držka offers a special combination of community and cuisine. The event has been organized annually in Veľké Držkovce since 2012 by the HODOČU civic association. Registered teams from throughout Slovakia compete in preparing the best tripe soup. If you view regional food culture not merely as a restaurant offering but as a tradition maintained by the community, this competition is one of the area's distinctive cultural connections. Veľké Držkovce thus combines a landscape along the Inovec stream with cycling routes whose surfaces and course descriptions vary, as well as an unusually rich local and ecclesiastical history. To compare other destinations, you can also view Trebichava, Uhrovské Podhradie, Šišov, Zlatníky, Borčany, Bánovce nad Bebravou, Rybany and Pochabany.Advertisement · We may receive a commission if you book.
