Chľaba

Chľaba combines riverside landscapes, wooded slopes and viticulture with remarkable cultural heritage. For planning your trip, the place is particularly interesting if you want to experience nature not separately from regional history: to the west, a designated nature reserve extends into the municipality, while the church, museum and historic wine cellars offer their own insights into the local past.

Landscape along the Ipeľ and Danube

Chľaba is located where the Ipeľ flows into the Danube. This gives the place a clearly recognisable landscape setting that stretches from the wooded heights to the river areas. The Kováčovské vrchy–juh national nature reserve extends into the western part of Chľaba. It was designated in 1966 and covers 364.14 hectares. Its distinctive character also lies in its classification as the northernmost locality of the so-called Pannonian flora.

The landscape of Chľaba consists of several clearly distinguishable elements: the Kováčovské kopce are covered with deciduous forests, vines grow on their cleared south-eastern slopes, and a high loess terrace complements the relief. Thus, forests, vineyards and the characteristic form of the loess landscape meet within a small geographical area.

Church, museum and wine cellars

The architectural history of the place is particularly evident in the Roman Catholic Church of sv. Imricha kráľoviča. The church was built in 1769 in the late Baroque style and remodelled after 1800 in the Neoclassical style. Older wall paintings on the vaults were restored in 1994.

A second cultural connection leads to viticulture. A group of six wine cellars in Chľaba was registered as an immovable cultural monument in 2007. Near Chľaba or directly in the village, there are also approximately 10-metre-long, barrel-vaulted wine cellars dug directly into andesite hills. The Pivničné múzeum was established in 2005 to preserve a unique presentation of architectural and craft traditions as well as viticultural traditions. Its collection includes valuable objects, equipment, photographs, written documents and other interesting items.

Educational trail and route to Chľaba

The Kováčovské kopce–juh educational trail is self-guided, linear, accessible in both directions and open year-round. It includes six stations and an introductory information board in Kamenica nad Hronom.

In addition, a blue-marked trail leads through Veľká dolina to Chľaba. The trail is therefore described as a separate connection and should not automatically be equated with the educational trail. Depending on whether you are interested in the natural environment, the history of viticulture or the local culture, the documented attractions can therefore be considered separately.
