Dvory Nad Žitavou

Dvory nad Žitavou presents a peaceful, multifaceted side of Slovakia: cultural monuments, a clearly described nature trail, religious history, fishing lakes and fruit cultivation offer different reasons to visit. The village is particularly easy to experience on the “Tajomstvá pri rieke Žitava” nature trail. The self-guided circular route is 11.8 km long, has an elevation difference of 25 m, can be walked in both directions, is intended for pedestrians and is accessible year-round. Along the way, you follow a route from the municipal museum past Calvary, along the course of the Old Žitava and the Branovský stream, to the vineyards of Dvorské, before the trail leads back to the village center. This allows you to combine a longer walk with several different local landscapes, without the route being restricted to a particular direction of travel.

Sacred Buildings and Local Memory

The Church of St. Adalbert is a Baroque church built in the second half of the 18th century. Its main altar and altarpiece date from 1777. Another distinctive feature is the Rieger organ, built in 1885, which continues to accompany the church’s liturgical life to this day. For visitors interested in culture, this provides a precise insight into several historical layers: the Baroque church, its 18th-century furnishings and an instrument from the late 19th century.

Calvary also shapes the cultural character of Dvory nad Žitavou. During its five-year construction period, almost 7,000 trees were planted on the site and 14 Stations of the Cross were erected. The Stations of the Cross, the bell tower and the staircase decorated with sculptures date from 1855 to 1860. The site also retains a clearly recognizable religious function: during Lent, Stations of the Cross devotions are held there on Good Friday; a Mass is celebrated there on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Museum and Visit Planning

The municipal museum opened in 2009. It displays objects, pictures and agricultural equipment that recall earlier times and the values of the community. It can be visited Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., by telephone appointment. If you would like to combine the museum with the nature trail, arranging an appointment by phone is therefore one of the practical points to consider before visiting the museum.

Fruit Growing, Fishing Lakes and Seasonal Experiences

Another side of the village is represented by Emilove Sady. The business has been growing apples, strawberries, peaches, cherries and plums in Dvory nad Žitavou since 1966. Every year, Emilove Sady also organizes pick-your-own events for strawberries and apples. This makes fruit growing visible as a seasonal part of the local character without reducing it to a single product.

The fishing lakes in Dvory nad Žitavou now serve a recreational purpose. An angling competition and a triathlon competition are held annually at the “1-es kavicsos” lake. Thus, alongside the cultural and historical tour, activities on the water and recurring competitions provide additional independent reasons to visit.
