Travnica: Manor Houses and Historic Water Technology
Accommodation in Travnica
Travnica brings together local history and clearly distinct cultural landmarks: a historic water installation, several manor houses and an educational trail starting in the centre. The contrast between technological history and architecture is particularly appealing. The Veterná studňa tells the story of an earlier water supply, while the Kaštieľ buildings showcase different architectural styles and phases of renovation. The thermal spa in nearby Podhájska is also the main tourist attraction for visitors to Travnica. If you are looking for a place with a local-history theme, distinguishing between sights in the village and a destination in the surrounding area will help you plan.
Veterná studňa: water technology in the village
The Veterná studňa, a national cultural monument built around 1920, stands in the western part of Travnica. The installation originally pumped water into a gravity-fed water supply system. A manor house, a distillery and a stable were connected to it. The three different types of buildings show that the water installation was part of a larger complex and served more than just one building.
In autumn 2017, the Veterná studňa underwent extensive restoration and was made functional again. Together, its construction around 1920, its former use and its restoration tell the story of the monument’s origins, function and renewal. The combination of technology and local history sets this perspective on Travnica apart from a purely architectural look at its manor houses.
Manor houses between the west side and the centre
On the western side of Travnica, towards Maňa, stands the Kaštieľ Ladislava Barlanghiho. Ladislav Barlanghyi built the manor house in 1862. In the centre is the late Baroque Kaštieľ Rudnyianszkych. The Kaštieľ Balogovcov is a Neoclassical manor house next to the church; it was remodelled several times, and Rudolf Tarisch had it extensively remodelled in 1928.
The three buildings offer different points of reference for a walk through local history: the construction date is the focus at the Kaštieľ Ladislava Barlanghiho, its late Baroque classification at the Kaštieľ Rudnyianszkych, and the series of repeated renovations at the Kaštieľ Balogovcov. This makes it clear that Travnica’s architecture cannot be reduced to a single period.
Park and educational trail
The trees add another distinctive feature. Exotic trees grow in the park west of the Kaštieľ Ladislava Barlanghiho, including a London plane, a two-lobed ginkgo and a tulip tree. If you are interested not only in the buildings but also in the design of their surroundings, these three tree species add a landscape perspective to the architectural one.
The educational trail “História a súčasnosť obce Trávnica” begins in the centre of Travnica, in front of the primary school building. This gives you a clearly identified starting point for finding your way around. Keep the locations separate: the trail starts in the centre, while the Veterná studňa is in the western part of the village.
Putting the thermal spa and travel connections in context
The nearby thermal spa in Podhájska is the main tourist attraction for visitors to Travnica. This brings together two distinct travel interests: the history of architecture and technology in the village, and a visit to a thermal spa in the surrounding area. Podhájska is a separate place and should not be confused with the sights in Travnica.
Regular bus services connect Travnica with Podhájska as well as Vráble, Šurany and Nové Zámky. The nearest railway station is in Podhájska, where you can connect to the Bratislava–Nové Zámky–Levice–Zvolen railway line. For specific travel arrangements, it is advisable to check the timetables for your travel dates. This lets you match your choice between local history and the thermal spa with the connections that suit your travel plans.
