Veľké Lovce between Hills, Forest and Memory
Veľké Lovce lies on the western slope of the Pohronská pahorkatina hills. The eastern part of the cadastral area is covered by oak and acacia forests. This gives the village two clearly recognisable sides: a location in hilly terrain and a landscape shaped by forests. When choosing a destination in Slovakia, Veľké Lovce is particularly interesting if you would like to combine a connection with nature with regional history, museums and individual routes.
History and Visible Culture
The first surviving mention of the municipality of Veľké Lovce dates from 1236. A more prominent building in the village is the Roman Catholic Church of the Maternity of the Virgin Mary, built in 1907. There is also a monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars in the local cemetery. It was created by the academic sculptor Jozef Kliský.
Historical sites in the cadastral area include the ruins of the former Baroque church and Pauline monastery of Mariánska Čeľaď (Máriacsalád). Their historical status is explicitly part of the site: these are the ruins of a former church and a former monastery. In addition, an order built a church with two towers and a monastery in Veľké Lovce.
Museums with Visits by Appointment
The local museum of Veľké Lovce provides access to local material and everyday culture. Visits can be arranged by telephone. Occasional exhibitions of embroidery, woven hemp textiles and lace are held there. These changing themes also make the museum interesting for visitors who would like to learn about craft traditions in addition to architectural monuments.
Another special feature is the House of Folk Housing, known in Slovak as Dom ľudového bývania. It is a private museum; a visit can be arranged with its founder, Jozef Galbavý. The house is listed as a national cultural monument. For planning the timing of your visit, there is also a specific documented guideline: a tour takes approximately 25 minutes. The House of Folk Housing is also the venue for the Slávnosti svätého Urbana event, which combines wine tastings, folklore and a children's programme.
Events and Routes
The goulash-cooking competition in Veľké Lovce is considered the start of summer and is scheduled for 29 June. There is also a local folklore event, the Lóťanské folklórne slávnosti. The two notices represent different forms of local cultural life: the competition combines the theme of food with a fixed date, while the folklore event focuses on regional tradition.
There are also specific points of interest for a cycling trip or a multi-day route plan. Zákostolie in Veľké Lovce is a stop on the eighth round of the “Cyklopotulky medzi Žitavou a Hronom” cycling series, which focuses on vanished ecclesiastical monuments. In addition, the three-day route “Trojdenná motanica okolím Podhájskej” leads from Vrstevník via Veľké Lovce to Lótsky kríž and onwards to Čechy.
