Veľký Kýr: Riverbed, Wine Cellar Lane and Baroque Churches
Accommodation in Veľký Kýr
Veľký Kýr brings together landscape, wine tradition and sacred architectural history within a compact area. The place is particularly suitable as a destination for you if you want to get to know a Slovak municipality not only through individual sights, but also through its established relationship with the river, history and local culture.
The old riverbed of the Nitra in the town centre
Veľký Kýr is located in the Danubian Lowland on both banks of the old riverbed of the Nitra. This old riverbed flows through the centre of Veľký Kýr and thus provides a concrete spatial reference point for finding your way around the town. Here, the landscape is not merely a backdrop but part of the town’s structure: the watercourse and the settlement are directly connected by their location on both banks.
A local history with an early written record
The history of Veľký Kýr dates back at least to 1113. In a charter of King Coloman, the place is first documented in writing under the name Ker. By this charter, the village was transferred to Zobor Abbey. The historical name and the specific record provide the local history with a clear point of reference, without limiting you to a general year without any further context.
Wine cellar lane and Festival Vína
For orientation on site, the historic wine cellar lane can easily be located in relation to the railway station: it lies 150 metres west of Veľký Kýr railway station. The wine cellar lane contains 72 wine cellars. It therefore has a clearly recognisable connection to the local wine culture, which is also visible in the Festival Vína. The festival is organised by an association of local winegrowers. The festival invitation refers to the 15th edition.
Baroque churches and furnishings
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a Baroque church created in 1768 through the complete reconstruction of an older medieval church. Inside, there is a stone baptismal font from the mid-19th century. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you are viewing historic sacred buildings, architectural history, older origins and religious use documented to the present day therefore meet here.
A second stop is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It is a Late Baroque chapel dating from 1793. Its Louis XVI-style altar features a painting of the Holy Trinity from 1820. The chapel complements the larger church building with a smaller, independent example of sacred architecture and makes several chronological layers within the local history visible.
Archaeological site
The documented historical traces of Veľký Kýr also include the “Vojenská stanica” archaeological site. It is associated with the registration number ÚZPF 346/0.
