Dolný Ohaj Between Sacred History and Wine Tradition
If you are looking for a Slovak village with clear cultural landmarks and varied cycling opportunities, Dolný Ohaj combines sacred heritage, archaeological traces, wine tradition and local events. A particular point of reference is the Chapel of Blessed Sister Zdenka. It is considered the first chapel in Slovakia dedicated to her and preserves relics of Sister Zdenka.
A memorial plaque at the parish house commemorates the national politician Juraj Holček, who worked there from 1848 to 1865. The Church of St. Imrich also offers several specific historical details: the Neoclassical church was built from 1872 to 1876 on the site of a Gothic church that had been destroyed in 1708. Inside are an altarpiece from 1928 by T. Ozoray of Nitra and a Baroque wooden baptismal font from the mid-18th century.
The history of the village reaches much further back. Dolný Ohaj is home to a Neolithic settlement of the Želiezovce culture. In addition, a grave find containing fluted pottery from the Eneolithic period, associated with the Baden culture, was discovered. Archaeological graves also attest to a Slavic settlement and a burial ground from the Great Moravian and post-Great Moravian periods. Here, therefore, you encounter different eras in one place, without the individual remains merging into a single historical layer.
Cycling Routes with Different Levels of Difficulty
Cycling routes with clearly distinguishable profiles are available for active exploration. Cycling route No. 5103 Okruh Dolný Ohaj is an easy green leisure route. It is 2.1 km long and has an elevation gain of 13 m. The local church and the Calvary complex are located along this cycling route, connecting the short distance with two cultural attractions.
Cycling route No. 8104 Dolný Ohaj–k meandrom leads to the natural attraction of the Meander Chrenovky natural monument. For a considerably more extensive sporting loop, there is cycling route No. 2102 Veľký okruh mikroregiónu Termál. It passes through Dolný Ohaj, is classified as a moderate-difficulty sports route, measures 55.6 km in total, has an elevation gain of 669 m and passes through ten municipalities. The documented range therefore extends from a short local loop to a long route through several municipalities.
Local Life and Regional Character
Traditional wine production is part of Dolný Ohaj's local character. At Ohajské fašiangy, a village home slaughter was demonstrated, and local slaughterhouse specialities and wine from Dolný Ohaj were sampled.
Music and community customs are also part of the cultural landscape. The Juraj Holček Choir performs traditional songs of the region, Slovak folk songs and Christian songs at municipal events as well as regional, national and church events. Celebrations on the eve of 1 May include decorating and erecting a maypole in front of the cultural centre, along with communal singing with the Juraj Holček Choir.
