Čechy – Hills, Forests and Winter Sports

Čechy combines the hilly landscape of the Pohronská pahorkatina with forests, a pond, historical traces and seasonal winter sports activities. The village lies at an average elevation of 240 metres. Almost the entire municipality is surrounded by deciduous forests; together with the water area nestled among them, this creates a picturesque view of the village and an appealing natural setting in every season.

Landscape Between Forests and a Protected Area

A special connection with nature arises from the Krivé hrabiny Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0086). It covers 125.74 ha and includes plot 793 in the cadastral area of Čechy, which is subject to protection level 2. Krivé hrabiny was proposed for the protection of several habitat types: Carpathian and Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (91G0), Pannonian-Balkan turkey oak forests (91M0), and Eurosiberian oak forests on loess and sand (91I0). The proposed protection status should be understood as such and not as an indication of completed or current development.

Getting There and Choosing the Location

Čechy is 22 km from Nové Zámky. There are two described road connections for reaching the village: Road 75 leads to Čechy via a turn-off near Semerovo; alternatively, you can reach Čechy via Road 580 from Šurany through Podhájska. Depending on your route, this connects the village with different regional points of reference, without implying any specific travel time.

Cycling, Hiking and Fishing

A cycling route passes through Čechy and its attractive natural landscape. It can also be used for walks and hikes.

The pond in Čechy is accessible to anglers during the fishing season and is stocked with carp. The same pond lies opposite the ski slope and can be used for ice skating and playing hockey during the winter months when it is frozen. Thus, the possible use of the water area changes with the season, while its suitability depends on its actual condition at the time.

Winter Sports When Conditions Permit

The ski slope in Čechy has a snowmaking system. The municipality also owns a 200 m long ski lift, which operates when snow conditions are suitable. When the lift is operating, evening skiing is also available from 17:00 to 21:00. In the area surrounding Čechy, there is terrain suitable for cross-country skiing when snow conditions are favourable. For seasonal planning, both the operating conditions of the ski lift and the snow conditions on the cross-country skiing terrain are therefore decisive.

Historical Traces in the Village

Čechy was first mentioned in writing in 1419. Between 1416 and 1419, several Hussite families settled here during a period of strong growth for the settlement. A visible connection with the village’s history is the church known as “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla”. It was originally a Baroque church dating from 1735 and was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. Čechy therefore brings together nature experiences, winter activities and a clearly documented historical background within a compact village setting.
