Mana: Žitavský luh, Culture and Cycling Routes

Mana combines a protected river landscape, historic buildings and clearly described routes for walking and cycling. For your travel decision, the main point of interest is the difference between experiencing nature and exploring cultural history: in Žitavský luh, the landscape and birdlife are the focus, while Veľká Maňa offers its own historical highlights with a church, manor house, park and folklore.

Žitavský luh: Nature with Clearly Defined Visiting Conditions

Žitavský luh is a significant remnant of the original meandering river course. The area also includes the cadastral territory of Veľká Maňa. Each year, spotted crakes and western marsh harriers breed here; during migration, Žitavský luh serves primarily as an important resting and habitat area for garganeys. The area therefore offers not only a visible landscape, but also a concrete connection to birdlife.

The Žitavský luh educational trail is 3.6 kilometres long, takes approximately 1–1.5 hours and includes three stops. It can be accessed from Road No. 511 via the dike and the Kmeťovo Bridge, as well as via the dike from Žitavce. The designated movement is exclusively on foot or by bicycle. Free movement is not permitted in the remaining parts of the protected area. This restriction is part of the visiting conditions and should be taken into account when planning a nature excursion.

The Maniansky Park in the cadastral territory of Veľká Maňa also focuses on the landscape. It is a protected historic park with protection level four.

Church, Manor House and Local History

Veľká Maňa is home to the Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, a late Baroque building dating from 1756. It was remodelled in the Classicist style in the first half of the 19th century. Inside is an early Renaissance Madonna painting from the 16th century. Beneath the church is a crypt containing the grave of Baron Ján Malonyay and a son of Gejza Foldvári, the last owner of the Veľká Maňa estate.

The historic local landscape also includes the late Baroque manor house from 1741–1742, built by František Xaver Koller. It is not open to public viewing because it houses a social services facility. The manor house should therefore not be planned as an accessible indoor destination.

Cycling Routes and Transport Connections

There are two routes available for cycling, described in different ways. Cycling route 5104, classified as REKREA, leads from Veľká Maňa to Trávnica, is 7.8 kilometres long and offers views of the Žitava Valley. Cycling route 8105, “Žitavský luh”, runs from Maňa to the Žitavský luh nature reserve. It is an easy 5.1-kilometre route and is also suitable for beginners.

Road II/511 runs through the Veľká Maňa district. The municipality of Maňa also has bus and rail connections. When choosing accommodation in Mana, the planned focus is therefore decisive: you can structure your stay around the walking and cycling routes in Žitavský luh or put the historical and cultural themes of Veľká Maňa at the forefront.

Folklore as a Cultural Highlight

The Požitavské Folklore Festival complements the architectural and landscape history with a living tradition. It is a traditional, non-competitive presentation of children’s and adult folklore groups and ensembles, with more than 250 participants every year. A stay in Mana can therefore be described not only through routes and sights, but also through regional culture.
