Rúbaň: Castle History, Landscape Park and Wine Tradition

Rúbaň combines several clearly distinct facets: historic ecclesiastical and castle architecture, a large landscape park, local commemorative culture and the wine world of Château Rúbaň. Anyone planning a stay in this Slovak municipality will therefore find not just individual sights, but different points of connection to culture, landscape and regional products.

Church, Castle and Local History

Construction of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Imrich began in 1908 on the foundations of an earlier church. The interior contains several works of art from different decades: a 1967 secco painting of the miraculous multiplication of the loaves, created by the amateur painter Štefan Petica, can be seen on the barrel vault. Above the chancel are illusionistic secco and wall paintings of Saint Stephen and Saint Imrich by Pavol Miskolczy, dating from 1979. The furnishings also include a polychrome Baroque Pietà from the 18th century, which was brought to Rúbaň from Šaštín in the 19th century.

Rúbaň Castle also bears several historical layers. It was built in the second half of the 18th century in the Classicist style, probably by the Horváthy family of Disznós, and was remodelled by the Jankovich family in 1830. Originally, it was not intended as a prestigious winery, but rather as a comfortable summer residence for wealthy families. An 8th-century Slavic-Avar skeletal burial ground was also discovered in the municipality; there was probably an even earlier settlement there.

A more recent commemorative site is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was erected in Rúbaň in 2025 and consecrated during the Dni obce Rúbaň event on 4 July 2025. The event took place on 4 and 5 July 2025. Its programme included a cultural programme at the cultural centre and continued the following day at the sports field.

Landscape Park and Bodies of Water

A 54.77-hectare nature and landscape park has been preserved beside Rúbaň Castle. The Steiger family established it around 1887. To this day, 12 species of protected exotic woody plants grow there. The municipal boundary with Strekov offers a different landscape impression: a willow grove has been preserved by a pond, creating several romantic corners.

Near the municipality of Rúbaň lies the 10-hectare fishing water VN Rúbaň č. 2, which is designated for angling. It complements the cultural and historical attractions with a distinct waterside landscape.

Wine Expertise and Regional Specialties

Château Rúbaň is dedicated to winemaking, combining modern technologies with traditional methods. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The estate has an ampelographic collection founded in commemoration of more than 250 years of history. Visitors can learn about the characteristic features, history and current condition of individual grape varieties there, as well as taste grapes and wine made from grapes from this collection.

In addition, Château Rúbaň offers wine tastings featuring wines that reflect the special characteristics of the region. As a practical amenity, private parking spaces are available directly on the premises. Local winemakers also presented their wines at a local event in 2024. Attractions for children were also provided at an event in Rúbaň in 2024.

Visitor Information on Site

The Rúbaň fire station equipment building houses a permanent exhibition about the history and present of the municipality, as well as the local volunteer fire brigade. Visitors should register in advance at the municipal office to visit this exhibition. During the municipal office’s opening hours, visitors can also obtain a commemorative stamp for hiking and travel journals, notebooks, postcards of Rúbaň and similar souvenirs.
