Vyšný Klátov lies at the transition between the northwestern part of the Košická kotlina basin and the Slovenské rudohorie mountains, in the source area of the Myslavský potok stream. The village is also located in the Volovské vrchy mountain range, which forms part of the Slovenské rudohorie highlands. The cadastral area of Vyšný Klátov includes part of the Volovské vrchy Special Protection Area. Predné Holisko is also a notable reference point for orientation in the landscape: at 947 metres, it is the highest peak in the cadastral area of Vyšný Klátov.

Hiking trails, a cycling route and the Klátovské meteority educational trail

A blue-marked hiking route begins in Vyšný Klátov and leads to the nearby Jahodná sports and recreation centre. A yellow-marked hiking route also begins in the village and leads to the Lajoška mountain hut. This route continues to Železný vrch at an elevation of 817.5 metres. A blue-marked cycling route also passes through Vyšný Klátov.

The Klátovské meteority educational trail is a distinct attraction. It begins in Vyšný Klátov, where four information boards are located. The educational trail is dedicated to astronomy and is connected with the meteorite fall of 28 February 2010 in the municipal territory of Vyšný Klátov. The trail is 2.2 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 60 metres. It is self-guided, linear, accessible in both directions and designed as a hiking trail for year-round use.

The Lajoška mountain hut is also part of the local landscape. It lies below the summit of Predná Holica at an elevation of 908 metres, in the vicinity of Vyšný Klátov. Thus, marked routes, a themed educational trail and named mountain points come together around the village.

Church, folk culture and local history

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built in 1869 on the site of an older church and incorporates the tower of the earlier church. Inside, it has historicist Art Nouveau altars from the first half of the 20th century. The building therefore combines several historical periods, without reducing its development solely to the construction date of the present church.

The history of Vyšný Klátov also includes a period as a German colony from 1317 to 1773. This era was connected with the exploration of mineral resources, as well as the mining and processing of iron ore. The Folk Culture Mini-Museum offers another perspective on the local past. It was established in 2001 in a former village smithy and displays historic furniture, household and agricultural objects, handmade traditional clothing and embroidery.

The bus connection to Vyšný Klátov is operated by Eurobus Košice. The local events and community life includes the ŽIJEM festival, which continues the more than ten-year tradition of CHRISTILAND. The Koinonia Ján Krstiteľ community centre was founded in 1994 in eastern Slovakia near Košice and offers spiritual and recreational activities.
