Košická Belá

Košická Belá combines its location on the Hornád River with deciduous forests, limestone slopes, regional folklore and clearly defined hiking destinations. The municipality lies in the northern tip of the Košice Basin area, in the Hornád valley on a small plateau above the river. The plateau above the river provides the spatial reference to the valley, while the eastern limestone slopes shape the wooded surroundings. The landscape around Košická Belá is characterised by deciduous forests on the eastern limestone slopes of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Coniferous forests occur only in insignificant areas. The landscape is therefore shaped above all by deciduous trees and limestone formations.

A distinctive landscape feature is Sivec, a 781-metre-high limestone cliff above the Ružín Reservoir. From the top of the cliff, there is a view into the deep valley of the Hornád. The protection of valuable nature is also documented: the Volovské vrchy Natura 2000 site primarily protects birds of prey and owls, as well as the red-breasted flycatcher (Ficedula parva), collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) and other species.

Folklore and ecclesiastical architecture

The Pantľička folklore group collects, preserves and presents traditions and songs from Košická Belá. Its traditional-culture programmes include “Večarki pri višivaňu”, “Večar na Ondreja”, “Ľetohoruce”, “Stupaňekapusti” and “Kecbabispominaju”. Pantľička also presents wedding traditions. The cultural aspect of the place is therefore not limited to a single building, but also encompasses traditional songs, customs and themed programmes.

The Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist in Košická Belá is a modern three-nave building constructed between 1938 and 1941. The construction period from 1938 to 1941 thus provides a different temporal accent from the traditional songs and customs. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. In terms of the village setting, it therefore stands alongside the traditional heritage as an independent, more recent element.

Hikes in different formats

In the village district of Košické Hámre, which belongs to the municipality of Košická Belá, a 4-hour-and-15-minute circular hike to Folkmarská skala begins and ends. Another option is the 3.5-kilometre locally yellow-marked connecting trail from Košická Belá to Nemcova dolka, where it joins the Legionnaire Trail. With its duration of 4 hours and 15 minutes, the circular hike is designed differently from the 3.5-kilometre connecting trail. The Roztoky educational trail lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Košická Belá. This makes it possible to distinguish a clearly defined circular hike, a marked connecting trail and an educational trail as different forms of exploring the landscape.
