Discover Turňa Nad Bodvou

Turňa nad Bodvou combines Gothic sacred architecture, a medieval castle ruin, protected karst landscapes and a regional wine route. This makes the town an interesting point of reference for you if you do not want to view culture and hiking as separate experiences. A longer route through the Zádiel Valley also ends here, while the Turnianska Wine Route connects the town with several wine and cultural sites in the surrounding area.

Gothic Church and Renaissance Architecture

The fortified Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century, probably on the foundations of an 11th-century church. Its frescoes were once painted over with white paint and were rediscovered in 1880 by the Hungarian writer Mór Jókai. The church is considered an important monument of Gothic sacred architecture and thus forms an independent cultural focus of the town.

A different architectural motif is offered by the preserved Kaštieľ in Turňa nad Bodvou. The building was constructed in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. Its characteristic features are its L-shaped floor plan and the two rounded corner towers on the main façade.

Hike to Turniansky hrad

A blue-marked hiking trail to the ruins of Turniansky hrad begins directly in Turňa nad Bodvou. The blue-marked ascent leads to the Hradná stráň saddle at an elevation of 350 m and takes approximately 35 minutes. From there, a historic, unmarked path with preserved traces of wagon wheels leads to Turniansky hrad. The area's protection regulations are crucial for understanding the route: the fifth level of protection applies in the Turniansky hradný vrch National Nature Reserve, and leaving marked hiking trails is prohibited. The historic path should therefore be understood as a documented landscape detail, not as a general recommendation to leave the marked trails.

Turniansky hrad was built after the Mongol invasion of Hungary, probably in the first half of the 13th century. The castle ruin therefore combines a specific hiking experience with a historic site whose origins date back to the period following the Mongol attacks.

Karst, Rare Flora and Protected Birds

The Turniansky hradný vrch National Nature Reserve covers 13.78 hectares. The protected landscape includes karst relief, characteristic geomorphological formations, as well as rare thermophilic flora and fauna. The Laxmann's bugle (Ajuga laxmannii) is particularly distinctive; Turniansky hradný vrch is its only known site. Northwest of Turňa nad Bodvou lies Turniansky rybník, which is part of an internationally protected bird protection area. These two natural features represent different facets of the surroundings: here, the dry, thermophilic karst area; there, a protected habitat for birds.

Routes with Different Character

If you are looking for a longer hike rather than a direct ascent, a 5¼-hour route through the Zádiel Valley and to Turniansky hrad ends in Turňa nad Bodvou. The town can therefore also serve as the endpoint of a wider landscape route. The Turnianska Wine Route has a different focus: it runs from Silická Jablonica via Hrušov, Jablonov nad Turňou, Hrhov and Dvorníky-Včeláre through Turňa nad Bodvou to Moldava nad Bodvou. Tastings of local wines are offered in conjunction with visits to natural and cultural monuments. Gastronomy, history and hiking are explicitly combined on this wine route.
