Discover Nižná Myšľa

Nižná Myšľa combines archaeological heritage, sacred architecture and experiences in nature in one place. The municipality lies at the transition between the Košice Basin and the Slanské vrchy, at the confluence of the Hornád, Olšava and Torysa rivers. This makes it a varied starting point for travellers who want to combine culture and nature in eastern Slovakia.

Landscape along the Olšava and paths into nature

Above the Olšava River lies Skalka, an area for hiking and recreation in nature on the eastern side of Nižná Myšľa. From there, views open up over the eastern Slovak landscape. Skalka is about 20 minutes from the village; the approximate time is therefore relevant for realistic day planning. At the same time, Skalka is not only a natural destination but also an archaeological site. Evidence ranges from the Upper Palaeolithic through the Neolithic and Eneolithic to the Bronze Age.

Another way to actively discover the landscape is the annual hiking event “Prechod Slanskými vrchmi”. It was officially held for the first time on 17 January 1970 and is organised by the Nižná Myšľa municipal office. The 15-kilometre route begins after the transfer from Nižná Myšľa towards Slanec. It leads over Bradlo at 840 metres, continues over Červený vrch and Koscelek, and returns to Nižná Myšľa. Anyone planning this route can take its length and the stated elevations into account when organising their day.

Archaeology in the Museum and Archeoskanzen

The Myšľanské obecné múzeum is located in a 13th-century monastery building. It presents the region’s archaeological and cultural heritage, especially finds from excavations at an archaeological site of European significance in the municipality of Nižná Myšľa. For visitors interested in history, the museum thus provides access to the local finds before the facilities of the Archeoskanzen Nižná Myšľa broaden the view to reconstructed living environments.

The archaeological complex at the Várhegy site includes fortified settlements, a burial ground and replicas of houses from the Early and Middle Bronze Age. In Nižná Myšľa, two replicas of Bronze Age dwellings, part of a defensive wall with an entrance gate, two kitchen ovens, a tunnel kiln for firing ceramic vessels and a replica of a sacrificial pit were also built. A functional replica of a monoxylon, meaning a boat made from a single piece of wood, is exhibited in the Archeoskanzen. The various reconstructions make the site’s archaeological focus particularly vivid.

Churches, Chapels and Pilgrimage Tradition

Religious history also shapes Nižná Myšľa. The present-day Church of Saint Nicholas is a Baroque-Classical church built between 1802 and 1805. Underground passages built of stone and mortar have been preserved in the monastery’s oldest parts of the original structure; catacombs are located beneath the monastery building. A Prussian vault bearing the Jesuit symbol IHS has survived from the former monastery chapel.

Other sacred buildings include the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary below the church, dating from the early 19th century, and the Chapel of the Holy Family from around 1930, with valuable doors and wrought-iron grilles. The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is the oldest chapel in Nižná Myšľa and stands by the bridge over the Olšava. The Marian Chapel was built on the road to Koscelek in 2000. The Cesta sv. Alžbety pilgrimage route has passed through Nižná Myšľa since 2011 and connects Košice with Sárospatak, also known in Slovak as Blatný Potok. A holy mass is celebrated once a year at nearby Koscelek.
