Opátka: Mining History, Protected Area and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Opátka
Opátka combines the history of mining with a landscape that, outside the built-up settlement area, belongs to the Volovské vrchy Natura 2000 protected area and bird protection area. This makes the town suitable for a trip where historical traces, nature and marked trails stand side by side. Opátka is particularly vivid where history can be encountered not only in dates, but also in buildings and traditional settlement structures.
A Place with a Mining History
Opátka was first mentioned in 1324 under the name Apokapotoka. During a period of mining prosperity, the town reached its highest population in 1808, with approximately 500 inhabitants. After copper ore mining ceased and the copper smelter was subsequently shut down and dissolved, presumably because it was unprofitable towards the end of the 19th century, Opátka gradually began to decline economically and socially. This development is part of the town's historical character and explains why the traces of mining occupy such an important place in its history. Opátka was divided for a long time into two parts, which belonged to the Abauj and Spiš counties respectively. Each part had its own mill, cemetery and inn. Another historical testimony is the Church of Saint Florian. It was built in 1784 and restored in 1845 and at the end of the 19th century. On the front of its triumphal arch are half-length figures of two miners. The depiction is a folk painting from the first half of the 19th century. The administrative building of the copper hammers also refers to this past. It is a single-storey late Baroque building with two wings and a mansard roof, dating from the 1770s. The building is currently inhabited and privately owned. This distinction is important for orienting yourself in the town: The building's history can be identified, but its present-day status is just as much part of its description as its historical value.Protected Landscape and Marked Trails
Outside the built-up settlement area, the cadastral territory of Opátka lies within the Volovské vrchy Natura 2000 protected area and bird protection area. One of the most significant tourist attractions associated with Opátka is the Kojšovská hoľa viewpoint summit. Together with the marked trails, this creates a connection between the town's history and the landscape experience, without the two areas offering the same thing. A blue-marked hiking trail runs through Opátka. To the north, it leads via the ATC turistclub signpost at an elevation of 330 m to the Ružín–Košické Hámre recreation area at the Ružín Reservoir. In a southerly direction, the blue-marked hiking trail leads to the Idčianske sedlo signpost at an elevation of 954 m. The two directions reveal different trail destinations: In the north, the recreation area at the reservoir is the focus, while in the south, it is a signpost at a higher elevation. In addition, a blue-marked cycle route begins in Opátka and leads to Košice.Encounters at MIMI farma
MIMI farma in Opátka offers a different way to experience the area. There, you can observe live bees up close during an encounter with a beekeeper. The program also includes the hands-on making of candles from beeswax. A tasting of Slovak honey is offered as an additional activity. MIMI farma thus offers a distinctive experience alongside the historic buildings and marked hiking and cycling trails: The focus is on bees, craftsmanship and a direct insight into Slovak honey. If you would like to compare other places for your trip to Slovakia, you can also find Malá Ida, Košická Belá, Medzev, Moldava Nad Bodvou, Bukovec, Budimír, Vyšný Medzev and Turňa Nad Bodvou. For the higher-level travel overview: Košice-Okolie District.
