Oravská Lesná

Oravská Lesná combines an extraordinary narrow-gauge railway with educational trails, winter sports, astronomy and historic cultural monuments. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Slovakia where technical history, nature experiences and seasonal activities can be combined, the town offers several clearly distinct focal points.

Forest Railway and Goral Culture

The Oravská lesná železnica is one of the few preserved narrow-gauge switchback railways in the world and is considered a unique technical monument. The journey to the Sedlo Beskyd mountain station covers three kilometres and takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Near the station, a lookout tower offers panoramic views of the Orava landscape. At Tanečník station, the Remeselný dom presents various crafts typical of Orava.

The “Gorali včera a dnes” exhibition at Sedlo Beskyd station also adds a cultural dimension. It presents the lifestyle and homes of the Gorals and also covers their traditional folk architecture, costumes, calendar customs and family customs. The railway is connected to Oravská Lesná by an approximately six-kilometre-long paved secondary road.

Educational Trails and Paths Through the Surroundings

The Náučný chodník Oravská Lesná starts in the town centre and offers three walking routes. Along the educational trail, 40 information boards cover natural history, forestry and nature conservation. The forestry educational trail Náučný chodník Oravská Lesná is more than four kilometres long. For a specific mobility choice, Route 1 is described particularly clearly: it is accessible to people with disabilities, bicycles and prams.

Religious destinations include the Kaplnka Sedembolestnej Panny Márie. The recommended route there can be covered by bicycle in approximately 45 minutes. Access by car to the named remote destinations in the forest, including this chapel, is prohibited; they should be visited by bicycle. A Stations of the Cross was built and consecrated next to the Kaplnka in 2022. The Chapel of Divine Mercy stands on the site of the first wooden church in Oravská Lesná, which was built in 1739 as a church dedicated to Saint Anne.

Winter Sports and Observations in the Sky

For winter activities, the Orava Snow winter sports centre offers two lifts and seven slopes with a total length of 8.5 kilometres. In addition, Orava Snow has five kilometres of cross-country ski trails. Lyžiarska škola Yeti offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for children and adults, as well as beginners and advanced skiers.

The Hvezdáreň u pána Mojmíra offers a different perspective. Visitors can observe stars there and, under exceptional circumstances, planets as well. The facilities include several astronomical telescopes, including the largest amateur astronomical telescope in Slovakia and the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. Visits to the Hvezdáreň by school classes or visitor groups must be arranged in advance. The lookout tower is open year-round to visitors and passing hikers; it has three floors and is 12 metres high.

Cultural Monuments in Oravská Lesná

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anne was built in 1914 in the modern Art Nouveau style and is designated as a national cultural monument. The Madonna and Child statue is also a national cultural monument. It was erected in 1820 as a votive offering after the end of a plague epidemic. Thus, in Oravská Lesná you encounter both a sacred building from the early 20th century and a monument with an explicitly documented historical reason for its creation.
