Bobrov between Calvary and Horná Orava

Bobrov combines important religious buildings, reminders of the historic linen trade, and the landscape of Horná Orava. If you are looking for a place with clear cultural and historical connections and a protected natural area for your trip to Slovakia, you can explore two distinct sides here: the dense ensemble of church, chapels, and Calvary, as well as the wetlands and riverside landscapes in the wider area.

Cultural monuments around the church and Calvary

The Church of St. James the Elder forms the centre of the town's history. The single-nave Baroque church has a polygonal-ended presbytery and a projecting tower. It was built from 1745 to 1753 and remodelled from 1777 to 1788. Inside, there are four Baroque altars and a pulpit. The church is listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia.

On the hill beside the church, the Bobrovská kalvária with 14 Stations of the Cross was built from 1890 to 1894. The complex was consecrated on 15 August 1894; its chapels contain terracotta depictions of the Stations of the Cross. Alongside the church itself, Bobrov therefore offers a clearly defined theme for anyone wishing to combine sacred art, historic architectural forms, and the religious history of the town.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary adds another architectural accent. It features elements of Oriental religious architecture, was also built from 1890 to 1894, and was consecrated on 15 August 1894. This chapel, too, is listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia. Local tradition also includes the Bobrovská púť Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, locally known as “Zelná”, which takes place annually.

Chapels, memorial sites, and the linen trade

The Chapel of St. Anne is part of Bobrov's old cemetery, also known as the “Plague Cemetery”, and dates from 1853. It contains a small altar and a statue of the Madonna and Child. The Ukrižovanie Krista ensemble was created in 1894. It is a life-size zinc group depicting Jesus on the cross, the Virgin Mary, the Apostle John, and Mary Magdalene.

The secular history of the town can also be seen in its built heritage. In Bobrov, remnants of houses connected with the historic linen-trading tradition have been preserved. The linen-trading courtyards were built after the model of manor houses and featured richly decorated façades and stucco vaults in the rooms. This gives you a different way of approaching the history of the town than through its religious buildings: Bobrov's traditional image was shaped not only by churches and chapels, but also by trade and representative architecture.

Protected landscape and cycling routes

The entire cadastral area of Bobrov lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. Several cycling routes run through the protected areas of this region. Between Námestovo and Bobrov, you can observe the Klinské rašelinisko peat bog and other wetlands. In the context of cycling routes around Bobrov, the shore of the Oravská priehrada reservoir is also one of the named landscape features.

The wetlands of the Orava Basin and the surroundings of the Oravská priehrada reservoir are important breeding habitats for the kingfisher, black stork, spotted crake, and common tern within the regional Horná Orava Natura 2000 site. The natural area is therefore not merely a scenic complement to the cultural monuments, but also has a specifically identified significance for birdlife. Bobrov, Trstená, Gmina Jabłonka, and Gmina Spytkowice are jointly carrying out the project “Rozvoj turistickej infraštruktúry spoločnej Oravy” to develop tourism infrastructure in the border region.
