Rabčice between Protected Landscape and Goral Tradition

Rabčice is located in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area, in Zone D with the second level of protection. At the same time, the peat bogs in the Rabčické bory locality belong to Zone B with the fourth level of protection. As part of the Natura 2000 network, the cadastral area of Rabčice is included in the Horná Orava Special Protection Area, which is important for international bird protection.

Protected Nature with Specific Local References

One of the prominent natural monuments is a large-leaved lime tree in the Rabčice cemetery. It is approximately 350 years old, 27 m high, has a trunk circumference of 680 cm and a crown width of 18 m. The lime tree has been protected since 1974. Another protected specimen is a mountain elm at the entrance to the village, by house or cottage No. 422. It is estimated to be approximately 250 years old; it is 35 m high, has a trunk circumference of 455 cm and a crown width of 20 m. This mountain elm has also been protected since 1974.

History, Language and Winter Tradition

The settlement history of Rabčice dates back to before 1612. In that year, Juraj Turzo recognized Jakub Ramža’s merits and hardships in founding the municipality. Local culture is also sustained by associations and ensembles. The Rabčičanka folklore group was founded in 1973 to revive the customs of Rabčice and Goral songs. The Kašunka children’s folklore ensemble was established in 1982; the children were taught the declining Goral dialect word by word.

Cycling Route and Cross-Country Skiing

In 2007, Rabčice established the tradition of the Gorálová bežka cross-country ski march. The event is organized during the winter months of January or February, depending on weather conditions. The route was approximately 20 km long and led through the cadastral area of Rabčice. For summer orientation, a 4.2 km section of a cross-border cycling route was built in Rabčice. The route runs along existing roads as well as through forest and grassland areas. A tourist and cycling map is also available in Rabčice. This provides both a winter cross-country skiing connection and a specific cycling link through varied landscape sections when choosing the location.

Regional Cuisine at Salaš u Štefana

A unique insight into the regional food culture is available at Salaš u Štefana. There, visitors can make their own Oštiepok cheese. Together with the hosts, they can also bake Moskôľ and prepare it with cracklings, bryndza or blueberry jam. Salaš u Štefana is located at the upper end of Rabčice, 4 km from the village entrance. This specific local reference complements the nature, culture and activity themes with a culinary experience.
