Veľké Pole lies at the transition between the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges. The destination can be explored through two particular interests: hiking and MTB routes through the landscape, and local history made tangible in buildings, memorials and a mining tradition. For your planning, specific distinctions matter: one hiking route is described by its distance and endpoint, while another is described by an approximate walking time to the summit.

Landscape and settlement pattern

The cadastral area of Veľké Pole lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. The protected limestone cave Veľkopolská jaskyňa and the Sokolec a Skala nature reserve are also located there. Together with 13 other municipalities, Veľké Pole is part of one of the few preserved historic landscape complexes in Slovakia. The settlement landscape is characterized by a scattered, dispersed or štál-type pattern. This classification draws attention not only to individual sights, but also to the region’s historic fabric.

Hiking and cycling

The Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Veľké Pole and is marked in red. The route runs for 34.1 kilometers from Veľké Pole to Handlová; its length may change if the trail administration revises it. If you want to head for the summit of Vtáčnik, you can use another specific guide for your hike: a red-marked hiking trail leads from the municipal office in Veľké Pole to the summit; the walking time is approximately four hours. Your actual pace and the conditions affect how long you are on the trail. The distance of the magistrála and the approximate walking time to the summit therefore answer different planning questions.

A route with a named starting point and destination is also designated for mountain bikers. The blue-marked cycling route 2317 “Penhýbel–Vtáčnik” begins in Veľké Pole and ends at the summit of the Vtáčnik mountain range. It is 15.2 kilometers long and classified as an EXPERT MTB route. Its length, route and classification give you specific points of reference for comparing this ride with the hiking options. As route conditions can change, check them before your ride.

Local history in buildings and memorial sites

An early date in the town’s history is 1395: that year, the Pauline Order from Lefantovce founded a monastery in Veľké Pole. The Roman Catholic church was built around 1511 in the late Gothic style. In front of the church stands a chapel built in 1792, commemorating a severe hailstorm that destroyed the entire village. These three details reflect distinct historical connections—a monastery’s founding, the church’s construction history and the commemoration of a momentous event.

In the center, the “Pomník padlým vojakom” monument near the municipal office commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War. The column known as “Morový stĺp” stands by the cultural center. It was erected in 1787 as a sign that the plague had affected the municipality. Other local details can be found in the cemetery: a bell tower made of oak wood stands next to the mourning house; the bell was cast in 2006.

Mining is also part of the town’s history. Silver and lead were mined in Veľké Pole; the mines were later closed. Together with its buildings and memorial sites, this gives the town a profile that is not limited to a single era.
