Tekovská Breznica: Castle Ruins and Volcanic Traces
Accommodation in Tekovská Breznica
Tekovská Breznica combines medieval castle remains, a Romanesque church and geological features nearby. The ruins of Breznica Castle lie above the town; the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the oldest monument in the municipality. To the southeast rises the rock face of Sokolia skala, while Putikov vŕšok offers another focal point for nature and geology enthusiasts. The town thus offers several clearly distinct points of interest for a trip to Slovakia: castles, religious architecture, hiking routes and volcanic formations.
Castle Ruins and Architectural History
Breznica Castle was a relatively large castle above Tekovská Breznica. It was built in the second half of the 13th century by the Archbishop of Esztergom. Remains of the castle's core walls are visible among the ruins; the castle's historical size and the surviving visible structures are therefore two different aspects. The ruins are registered as an immovable national cultural monument in the Central List of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number ÚZPF 1273.
A Church with Several Building Phases
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style, on elevated ground above the municipality. It is considered the oldest monument in Tekovská Breznica. An extension added in 1912–1913 and the extensive reconstruction in 1993 mark two later, clearly distinct building phases. This makes it possible to trace the building's history from its medieval construction through the work carried out in the 20th century.
On Foot to the Viewpoint and Castle Ruins
The marked green hiking trail to Breznica Castle runs from Tekovská Breznica railway station through the town. The nature trail is a less steep alternative to the green trail and leads to a viewpoint near the ruins. This lets you weigh up starting at the railway station against the nature trail's gentler gradient, without assuming a walking time.
Rock Face, Tower and Volcanic Heritage
Sokolia skala is a rock face 415 metres above sea level, southeast of Tekovská Breznica and above the ruins of Breznica Castle at Tomanovom rígli. At Watchtower Luchtov, only the perimeter walls of the square tower remain. It probably served as a defensive and signal tower, warning the population and the castle guards. There is no signposted path to Watchtower Luchtov, and access is relatively difficult. Check local conditions before planning a visit.
Putikov vŕšok, a protected natural monument covering 21.06 hectares and designated in 1996, lies near Tekovská Breznica. It documents the most recent volcanic activity in Slovakia and features a volcanic-exhalative channel. Putikov vŕšok is also home to Sesame Cave, a 26-metre-long volcanic vent through which volcanic gases escape during an eruption.
The eastern part of the cadastral area of Tekovská Breznica lies within the protection zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity.
