Ostrý Grúň: Hiking, Cycling and Culture

Ostrý Grúň combines marked trails, memorial sites and vibrant regional culture. Educational Trail, Mountain Paths and Cycling Routes

The Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail is 32 kilometres long and passes through Ostrý Grúň. It was created by the municipalities of Kľak, Ostrý Grúň and Hrabičov along the route of a disused forest railway. In winter, the educational trail is also used as a cross-country ski track. One notable stop is the Pokuty earth bridge, the best-preserved structure on the “Po stopách lesnej železnice Kľakovskou dolinou” educational trail. The inscription “STAVĚNO 1926” on its gable indicates that it was built in 1926.

Routes to Vtáčnik often begin in Ostrý Grúň. A yellow-marked hiking trail from Ostrý Grúň is one of the routes to the summit. If you are planning to cycle, the national cycling route register lists route 2596 Hrad Revište–Ostrý Grúň–Píla, which is 31.7 kilometres long. The blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route is 19 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 880 metres. It is intended for experienced mountain bike or e-bike riders and begins at the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Ostrý Grúň. Another cycling route to Revište Castle leads from the centre of Ostrý Grúň towards Hrabičov and then turns into the Pokutská Valley.

The Pokutský Waterfall is located in the vicinity of Ostrý Grúň. It is a protected natural monument in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. From the southern edge of the village, the waterfall can be reached via a mainly asphalt road along the Pokutský stream.

Memorial Sites and Regional Culture

In the lower part of Ostrý Grúň stands the Pomník umučených občanov memorial at the site where inhabitants were murdered on 21 January 1945. The memorial is a national cultural monument. The Ostrý Grúň Memorial Room was reopened in 2005 in cooperation with the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica and is located next to the municipal office. A sculpture of a mother with a child dating from 1954 also stands in front of the municipal office.

Local culture is also connected with specific dates and traditions. The hand-mowing and cultural event Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa was held for the first time on 10 June 2006. One round is regularly held in the meadows above Ostrý Grúň as part of the Slovak hand-mowing league; the event also offers a short mowing course. The Vtáčnik singing ensemble was founded in Ostrý Grúň on 5 May 2008. It strives to remain active so that the customs of its ancestors stay alive, and it plans to focus on folklore.

Another local point of interest is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a folk Classicist building dating from the late 18th century. Thus, alongside hiking, winter and cycling opportunities, Ostrý Grúň also highlights historical evidence, memorial sites and forms of traditional culture.
