Župkov between Village History and the Mineral Trail

Župkov combines an engaging history of everyday life with an unusual geological theme. In the Ľudová drevenica, a reconstructed traditional wooden house on stone foundations, a municipal museum and an exhibition on the traditional life of the local inhabitants were established after the reconstruction in 2014.

This arrangement is important for planning your day, because access to the exhibition should not simply be assumed to be available as an attraction open at any time.

The Tetradymit Educational Trail

A second defining experience is the Tetradymit Educational Trail. The trail begins in the centre of Župkov and leads to the now-filled-in adit in Horný Župkov. It is self-guided, linear, accessible in both directions and laid out for year-round use. It is an easy hiking trail. The listed access point is the Župkov, Horný Župkov stred bus stop.

Its subject goes beyond ordinary hiking: the trail combines geological, mineralogical and historical points of interest. The Tetradymite occurrence near Župkov is located in a small, now-filled-in adit near Kopanica Pod Angletovcami. It is one of three known occurrences of this rare mineral worldwide. Andrej Kmeť and František Kabin gave the mineral the name Župkovite. This gives the educational trail a clear local connection made up of landscape, mining history and mineralogy.

Further Impressions of Župkov

At the northern edge of the municipality, in the Kľakovská dolina Riečky, there is a sports and leisure facility open year-round. A mobile armoured personnel carrier, OT 65, stands in front of the municipal office as a cultural addition and serves as a reminder of wartime events. Smaller religious structures are also part of the village scene: the filial Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is dated to 1994, while the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates from 1946.

The 2026 Deň obce Župkov included local performances, folklore groups, professional musicians, sales stalls and an amusement park. The festival was held in 2025 and 2026 as a public municipal celebration. The Župkov Christmas Markets took place in 2024 and 2025. These dated examples form part of the documented event history of the village and should not be equated with a permanently available programme of events.

Hiking and Cycling with Different Levels of Difficulty

If you would like to explore Župkov by bicycle, the Z Ostrého Grúňa do Píly cycling route can be travelled in both directions. It is intended for more experienced cyclists and offers panoramic views of Župkov and the surrounding hills. In terms of difficulty, it therefore differs clearly from the easy Tetradymit Educational Trail. The two options also have different focuses: the educational trail concentrates on geology, mineralogy and history, while the cycling route directs attention to Župkov and the hills.
