Hrabičov – Educational Trail, Cycling Routes and Forest Railway History

Hrabičov combines nature experiences with traces of a disused forest railway. This makes the village an interesting choice for travellers who want to focus their Slovakia trip not only on landscapes, but also on regional transport and local history. The main attraction is the 32-kilometre-long Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail. In addition, a cycling route in the Vtáčnik Mountains, winter use as a cross-country skiing trail and historical exhibits offer various ways to explore Hrabičov.

Educational trail through the Kľakovskou Valley

The Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail is 32 kilometres long and is considered the longest forestry educational trail in Slovakia. The trail was built jointly by the municipalities of Hrabičov, Kľak and Ostrý Grúň along the route of a disused forest railway. The educational trail therefore combines a nature-related theme with a specific section of regional transport history.

Hrabičov has an open-air exhibition on the history of the former forest railway. It includes two railway carriages and a depot. Historical photographs and a map complement the exhibition. It relates to the former forest railway and should be understood as a historical part of the visit, not as an indication of current railway operations.

Another surviving testimony is the Pokútsky Bridge. It is the only monument of the former forest railway on this route that has been preserved in its original condition. Together with the exhibition and the educational trail, it provides a coherent insight into the former use of the route. This does not imply a current train connection or ongoing museum operation.

Church and practical information

The local history also includes the Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary in Hrabičov. It is a filial church of the Kľak parish. However, the building’s historical or ecclesiastical identity says nothing about current opening hours or guaranteed access for visitors.

For travel by public transport, regular intercity buses to Hrabičov operate from Žarnovica.
