Orovnica between the Hron Valley and Pohronský Inovec

Orovnica connects the landscape of the Hron Valley with the southeastern slopes of Pohronský Inovec. Most of the municipality lies on these slopes; only a small part is located in the Hron Valley. The Hron, which flows through Orovnica, forms the geographical axis of the area and has carved a deep, pronounced valley bounded by the Štiavnické vrchy, Pohronský Inovec, Tríbeč and Vtáčnik, as well as the Žiarska kotlina. This makes the area appealing to travelers who want to combine landscapes with regional history.

Dievčia skala: Viewpoint, chapel and traditional history

One particularly striking landmark is Dievčia skala above the main road toward Nová Baňa, less than two kilometers from Orovnica. From there, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the Hron Valley. In the second half of the 19th century, a small chapel was carved into the rock beneath the summit of Dievčia skala. Behind a metal grille stands a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Dievčia skala was also a pilgrimage site. In the 1950s and 1960s, residents of Orovnica held Marian devotions there almost every Sunday in summer. A legend known throughout the wider area tells of a girl who saved her brother from forced conscription by jumping from the rock. A second version says that she freed her beloved in this way. The two traditional versions are part of the site's oral history and complement the visible chapel with a local legend.

Zemné valy and the historical traces along the Hron

The Zemné valy begin at elevation point 378 m on the western slope above the bank of the Hron, south of the Orovnica cemetery near Úkolné. The fortification is 1,200 meters long in total. Its parallel ramparts and ditches extend toward Červený kameň as far as the Hradiský potok, also known as Orovnický potok. Those interested in historical traces in the landscape will find here a different form of local history than at the rock chapel: it is not a single structure but an elongated complex that shapes the area.

Church, bell tower and memorial sites

The Roman Catholic Church of Kostol sv. Jána Boscu is part of the area's sacred history. It was built in 1935 on the site of an older wooden bell tower. The older bell tower is decorated with ornamental paintings, biblical scenes and medallions featuring portraits of saints.

Orovnica is also home to the memorial to the fallen partisans, “Pomník padlých partizánov,” which is listed as a national cultural monument and memorial site. The “Pamätné miesto SNP s pomníkom” was designated a national cultural monument in 1963. These places give a stay a cultural and historical dimension that clearly differs from the landscapes of the Hron Valley and Pohronský Inovec.

Hike to Veľký Inovec

For a more demanding excursion, a hike through the valley of the Orovnický potok leads to the summit of Veľký Inovec at an elevation of 901 m. This route connects the valley with a specific mountain destination and complements the shorter cultural and historical points of interest around Orovnica with a longer hiking option.
