Tomášovce: Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Tomášovce
Tomášovce combines its location in the Lučenec Basin with a rich local history. A medieval document, the Evangelical church and local memorial plaques provide tangible points of reference for its history. At the same time, the village can be understood through its landscape: the municipal area ranges from flat to hilly terrain and lies mostly on the right side of the Krivánsky stream. For a trip to Slovakia that brings together local history and landscape, Tomášovce offers two clear themes that can be explored independently.
Location in the Lučenec Basin
Tomášovce lies in the northern part of the Lučenec Basin and mostly on the right side of the Krivánsky stream. The municipal area extends from 200 to 330 metres above sea level, and its terrain ranges from flat to hilly. The basin, stream and elevation range describe different scales of the same landscape: the broader setting, a geographic point of reference and the relief of the municipal area. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: the basin location describes the landscape setting, while the elevation range and relief characterise the municipality more precisely. The natural environment of the municipal area is home to forest, field and water game, as well as fish.
Documents, Estates and Crafts
The first historical mention of Tomášovce appears in a document issued by Béla IV in Zvolen on 3 August 1247. This precise reference leads into the village’s history in the 13th century. Matej Bel offers another perspective: in the early 18th century, he described Tomášovce as a wealthy and prosperous village belonging to Count Zichy and the noble Semerovci family. Tomášovce was mostly owned by the estates of Divín and Halič. These historical references link the written mention of the village with its place within the system of noble estates. Local crafts included pottery and pipe-making, while residents also cultivated their fields. Crafts and agriculture thus offer another perspective on life in the village in the past, alongside its history of estate ownership. The Evangelical school building is another dated point of reference: it dates from 1622.
Church and Remembrance
The Evangelical church connects an older site with a later consecration. It stands largely on the site of an earlier church, which was destroyed on 20 January 1945. The Evangelical church was consecrated on 30 September 1995. The two dates mark different events: the destruction of the predecessor building in 1945 and the consecration of the church in 1995. This makes the sequence of events in the local church history clear.
Two memorial plaques commemorate different subjects. One is dedicated to the local pastor Daniel Mazárius and was unveiled on the 250th anniversary of his martyrdom. The other commemorates the victims of the First World War. In this way, remembrance of an individual from the village stands alongside commemoration of the war dead. Together with the church and the Evangelical school, the plaques convey a cultural heritage encompassing several people, events and buildings.
