License: Historic Center, Museums and Greenways

License combines a dense historic center with extensive parks and recreational areas. If you would like to combine culture, urban history, and greenways on your trip to Slovakia, begin your first tour at Kubínyiho Square in Lučenec. Numerous original bourgeois houses and historic buildings form a heritage zone there; the defining structures include two churches, the Reduta, and the town hall.

Urban History Around Kubínyiho Square

The Lučenec Synagogue is a special highlight of the historic tour. Its architecture combines Byzantine-Oriental and Art Nouveau elements, while a monumental dome defines the interior. The building is a national cultural monument and part of Slovakia's Jewish Heritage Route. Following its reconstruction, the synagogue was opened to the public as a multicultural space in May 2016; it also serves cultural and social purposes.

At the northern edge of Kubínyiho Square stands the neo-Gothic Calvinist, or Reformed, church of Lučenec. Its 64-meter-high tower was completed in 1896. The Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, Lučenec congregation, took over the administration of the building again in 2005; services are held there. The town hall houses the Lučenec Town Museum and is also a national cultural monument.

Museums Offering Different Perspectives

The Lučenec Town Museum dedicates its permanent exhibitions to the history of the town and the life of the bourgeois class. Other topics include the production of factories and craftspeople, schooling in earlier generations, and living conditions in the first half of the 20th century. This historical perspective is complemented by works by the painter František Gyurkovits.

Since 1985, the Novohrad Museum and Gallery has been located in the listed building of the former county court in the historic center of Lučenec. The collection comprises more than 25,000 archaeological, ethnological, historical, and gallery objects. These include folk ceramics, enamelware, and historic glass. The Novohrad Museum is also presented with a special focus on folk ceramics and glass.

Another cultural destination is the Július Szabó Memorial House. It was established in 2008 in the villa in the Lučenec park where the artist lived. Works by Július Szabó dating up to the 1960s are displayed there, covering different subjects and using various techniques.

Parks, Water, and Cycling Routes

Lučenec Town Park covers 17 hectares and is designed in three garden styles. A hiking trail and two cycling routes run through the park, connecting it with the surrounding region. This makes it possible to complement the cultural part of your stay with walks and rides in the open air without losing sight of the town's history.

The Ľadovo Water Reservoir is available for recreation and sport fishing in summer. It is located on the Tuhárský potok in the cadastral area of the town of Lučenec and covers 26.2 ha. In the Lučenec Forest Park, visitors can enjoy two recreational areas and two cycling routes with a combined length of 10.15 km. One of these cycling routes includes a 360-meter-long educational trail with three stations and information panels.

There is also a clearly defined selection for shorter exercise sessions: Nordic walking routes measuring 1.0 km and 3.0 km run through the Lučenec urban forest park. People of all age groups can try these routes. For longer cycling tours, one route leads from Lučenec Town Park via the Lučenec–Ľadovo Park and other places to Ipolytarnóc.

Lučenec railway station offers assistance to and from the platform and to and from the trains, including boarding assistance without prior registration.
