Ružiná between the reservoir and protected landscape

Ružiná combines water, nature and local history. The Ružiná Reservoir lies in the northern part of the Lučenec Basin on the Budinský Stream and is used for sports and recreational purposes. The protected area preserves a complex of wet meadows and various stages of development of a marshy alder forest that transitions into a mesophilous oak forest. The described vegetation also includes alders with so-called stilt roots.

This combination is important for understanding the landscape: Ružínske jelšiny does not merely represent wooded areas, but rather the interplay of wet meadows, marshy alder forest and the transition to another type of forest. In the bed of the Teplica, warm springs ensured that it did not freeze in winter. This historical natural detail adds another distinct element to the picture of the water-shaped surroundings.

Baroque local history and accommodation

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi in Ružiná is part of the area’s cultural heritage. The Baroque church was built from 1750 to 1755 and is the oldest building in Ružiná. It therefore provides a historical focal point that predates the construction of the reservoir by a considerable margin.
