Lehôtka combines a long local history with a central bell tower and festivals that bring music, sport and local cuisine into the annual calendar. The village is located in the northwestern part of the Lučenská Basin, in the valley of the Tuhársky stream, at an elevation of 267 metres. This makes it a culturally rich destination for a visit to Slovakia, with events at different times of the year.

Local History and Landscape

The first written mention of Lehôtka dates from 1385. The village’s origins are traced back to the 14th century: Lehôtka was established at that time under the name Lehota through organised colonisation led by the local population. Its founding and its first written mention are two distinct historical reference points. Archaeological finds from the Stone Age and Bronze Age take the history of the area back even further.

The village seal provides another historical trace. Lehôtka probably had its own emblem engraved for the first time in the second half of the 18th century. It depicted the outlines of a ploughshare and a coulter. The western part of Lehôtka is wooded with oak trees and has brown forest soils as well as lessivated soils; forest and field game can be found there.

Bell Tower and Cultural Sites

In the centre of Lehôtka stands a brick bell tower on a square ground plan, with a bulb-shaped roof dating from 1985. It houses two bells, consecrated on 14 September 1924. The ground plan describes the building’s form, while the bulb-shaped roof is the upper feature of this folk-style structure.

The Slovenská izba is also located in the municipal office. It was opened on 1 September 2012 as part of Dni obce – Lehôtská hostina. Thus, in addition to the local history and bell tower, Lehôtka’s character includes a named cultural site in the municipal office and the story of its opening.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

Dni obce – Lehôtská hostina is the largest event in Lehôtka and takes place every year on the first weekend in September. The programme combines music, entertainment and sport. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, plan your visit for that weekend and check the specific event dates in advance.

In October, the culinary event Deň zo zemiakov, kapusty a kysnutého cesta takes place. Traditional Slovak and homemade dishes are served to residents and visitors. The two autumn events have different focuses: in September, the programme features music, entertainment and sport, while in October the dishes on offer take centre stage.

Traditional Lehôtka cuisine included sour bean soups and halušky filled with cabbage or bryndza, as well as halušky with scrambled eggs and cracklings, lokše and potato nálesníky. At home slaughterings, dishes included jaternice, serikaše, klobásy, bacon and ham, along with other smoked meats. These dishes are part of the historical food culture; the October festival explicitly serves traditional Slovak and homemade dishes.

The women’s club at the municipal office also organises Páračky in February. In May, Lehôtka holds a bonfire to mark Victory over Fascism Day. Together with the September and October festivals, these events show that the cultural calendar is not limited to a single date during the year.

Routes and Travel Planning

No marked cycling or hiking route runs directly through Lehôtka or its immediate surroundings. Several cycling routes pass through nearby Halič. The distinction is important for your plans: the local history and festivals mentioned here are based in Lehôtka, while the route options for cyclists are different in Halič. Since route networks can change, check the current route information when planning a specific trip.
