Podrečany between Cultural Heritage and Landscape

Podrečany combines a remarkable cultural history with a landscape along a watercourse and several signposted trails. The village lies on the banks of the Krivánsky potok at the northern edge of the Lučenec Basin. This makes it a destination where historic buildings, regional history, hiking and cycling routes, and the traces of a former magnesite mine stand closely side by side.

The area of Podrečany ranges from 204 to 602 m above sea level. The entire area faces southeast and is protected by mountain ridges to the west.

Manor House and Churches as Historical Landmarks

The manor house of Podrečany is designated as a cultural monument. It was built in 1893 in the Art Nouveau style based on French models and integrated into a landscaped park. The single-storey, U-shaped building has a loggia, a terrace and rich stucco ornamentation. Thus, Podrečany's local history centres on a clearly defined architectural ensemble, without its character having to be reduced to a single era.

Sacred architecture includes the Roman Catholic Chapel of the Holy Trinity, a Baroque building from the 18th century. The Evangelical church was built between 1863 and 1866, after an original chapel had been extended in 1836 and demolished around 1862. Its interior contains a Neoclassical altar and a Neoclassical pulpit from the mid-19th century. Two bells complete the historic furnishings: a large bell cast in Budapest in 1890 and a small bell cast in Trnava in 1923.

The local economic history can also be seen in a specific detail. In 1843, the inhabitants of Podrečany made pipes at home alongside farming. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a picture that connects architectural history with former everyday work.

Hiking and Cycling around Podrečany

The blue hiking trail no. 2632 Podrečany–Tuhár–Polichno–Bralce runs through Podrečany. The route is 18 km long. Those wishing to place the village within longer cycling routes will also find the 117 km Novohradská cyklomagistrála here, on the Detva–Podkriváň–Divín–Lučenec route. Another option is the blue cycling route Mučínska jaskyňa–Rapovce–Lučenec–Ružiná–(Látky), which is 17 km long.

In addition, the northwestern cycling circuit of the town of Lučenec is 43 km long in total. The active tourist association of Podrečany regularly organises ascents to Sedem chotárov. These different routes show that here you can choose between an 18 km hiking connection, regional cycling routes and a longer circuit without losing sight of the village's history.

A recurring event in the local annual calendar is the volleyball tournament “O pohár starostu obce”, held every year in Podrečany towards the end of the summer holidays.

The Former Mine Lake

A former magnesite mine in Podrečany has been transformed by flooding ongoing since 1998 into a lake of approximately 10 ha, with a water depth of about 97 m. The former mine lake is surrounded by densely vegetated slopes and has greenish-coloured water. As a landscape feature, it is unusual, but clear restrictions apply to visiting it: access is prohibited because of possible landslides, unsecured slopes, flooded mine shafts and the very difficult access to the water surface.

Getting There and Further Orientation

Podrečany is connected to Lučenec by rail and bus services. Those considering accommodation in the village can therefore base their choice on their preferred focus: the cultural monuments, the signposted hiking and cycling routes, or the landscape along the Krivánsky potok. The former mine lake is part of the village's character, but because of the prohibition, it is not an freely accessible destination for excursions.
