Šíd: Hiking, Culture and Mineral Springs

Šíd combines marked hiking trails with a range of historical and natural-history themes. Here, you can combine a route to the 514-metre-high Veľký Bučeň with the history of the village, mineral springs and a paleontological site. Historical orientation in the village

One of the defining buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of the Name of Mary. It was built in 1896–1897 in the historicist style and has a single-nave layout. The Neoclassical manor house dating from 1880 is also part of the village’s history. Today, the municipal office of Šíd is located in this building. Together, the two buildings illustrate different historical accents: the church represents historicist ecclesiastical architecture, while the manor house reflects the village’s Neoclassical history.

Mineral springs and paleontological traces

Mineral springs emerge within the cadastral territory of Šíd. Two different types of springs can be distinguished here: the “Prameň pri železničnej stanici” mineral well is located near the railway station in Šíd. The LC-73 spring at the village spring, by contrast, remains in a natural, undeveloped state. It can be observed through occasional bubbles emerging in a stream; its water is not used at all. This distinction is important for your planning because this is a matter of natural-history observation, not a described bathing or drinking facility.

Another special feature is the paleontological site in Šíd. Skeletons of mammoths, rhinoceros-like carnivores and other animals were unearthed there. Together with the mineral springs, it adds a natural-history perspective to Šíd. Hiking trail to Veľký Bučeň

A green-marked hiking trail starts in Šíd and leads to the Veľký Bučeň saddle. There, the trail connects to a red-marked hiking trail that continues to the 514-metre-high summit of Veľký Bučeň. You can therefore plan your journey according to the distance you want to cover: the starting point is in Šíd, while the described connection at the saddle enables a continuation to the summit.

The hiking trail is particularly worthwhile as a focus if you do not want to plan your stay exclusively around the buildings and natural-history themes mentioned above. The historicist church, manor house, springs and site offer different experiences from the marked route towards Veľký Bučeň.
