Fiľakovo Castle and the surrounding landscape

Fiľakovo Castle is a medieval stone castle in the centre of the city. It was built on volcanic tuff and is first mentioned in the mid-13th century. A 505-metre-long educational trail runs through the castle grounds. Five information panels provide details about the history of the castle, the natural conditions, the vegetation, the geological structure of the castle hill and the surrounding landscape. The circular route thus combines historical orientation with concrete insights into the underlying geology and the local plant life.

Pedestrians can access the castle via Podhradská Street; vehicles reach it via Baštová Street. The castle hill forms an individual part of the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. Fiľakovo lies on the edge of this protected landscape area, which offers opportunities to explore nature and go hiking.

City Museum and historical development

Since 1994, the Fiľakovo City Museum has been housed in the local Reduta building, the Vigadó. Its permanent exhibition traces the history of the city from the destruction of the castle in 1682, or from the resettlement of the small town, through to the 1960s. A separate exhibition room is dedicated to the traditions of the local enamel factory and local industrial enterprises. In this way, the exhibition complements the medieval history of the castle with the more recent development of crafts and industry.

Church, Monastery and City Park

Fiľakovo’s historic buildings include the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was rebuilt as a single-nave church between 1694 and 1727 after its predecessor was destroyed by the Turks in 1544. The Franciscan monastery adjoins it on the northwest side. The two-storey building, constructed between 1699 and 1727, has three wings and a central courtyard. For centuries, the Franciscans shaped the spiritual life of Fiľakovo and remain closely connected with the city to this day.

The city park offers a place to relax, while also being home to rare, protected trees and a renovated zoo. Alongside the castle, church and museum, it therefore provides an urban setting where nature and leisure come together.
