Holiša lies in the southeastern part of the Lučenec Basin, on a terrace of the Ipeľ River at the mouth of the Suchá stream. Fields, meadows, pastures and bodies of water shape the town’s habitats. Among the fauna, birdlife is the most species-rich group alongside insects. The river, its tributary stream and the open landscape give Holiša a distinctive character.

Landscape, Waterways and Birdlife

Within the Poiplie Protected Bird Area near Holiša, there is a body of water created by surface gravel extraction. Rybník Holiša pond lies 180 metres above sea level, is fed by water from the Ipeľ and is situated in a meadow habitat. Its catchment area measures 2.5 hectares.

Birdwatching also has a historical connection: a survey conducted from 2010 to 2012 recorded a total of 18 breeding territories in the Poiplie Protected Bird Area. Some territories were located in or near Holiša.

Canoeing and Cycling Route

The 10-kilometre Splav Ipľa canoe route runs from Holiša to Kalonda and begins in a protected bird area. As you travel along the Ipeľ by canoe or kayak, you can observe waterbirds and other birds, various fish species and other local wildlife. Water conditions and reservations may vary; check operating conditions before your trip.

For an activity on land, the 13.3-kilometre Južný cyklookruh mesta Lučenec cycling route runs nearby. The two routes differ in how you travel and where they begin: the cycling route is near Holiša, while the canoe route starts in the town and leads to Kalonda. When planning your trip, you can choose between a nearby cycling route and a water excursion starting in Holiša.

The Novohrad–Nógrád Geopark is close to Holiša and provides a regional context. It is included in the UNESCO Global and European Geoparks networks. Fruit growing also has a rich tradition in Holiša, adding a local agricultural connection to the landscape.

Church and Cultural History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Holiša is a Baroque church built in 1768 on older foundations. It is listed in the Central Register of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic (ÚZPF SR) under number 11224/0. The church has three bells: the oldest dates from 1612, while the other two date from 1847 and 1930. The oldest bell therefore predates the church’s construction in 1768.

The history of a water mill is also part of the town’s story. The first documented reference to a water mill in Holiša comes from a register dating to 1549. The historic mill was probably located on the southern edge of the settlement beside a mill race that formed the northern branch of the Ipeľ. Its probable location and early documentation provide a distinct historical connection to the river landscape.

The Roman Catholic reading circle and choir in Holiša were founded in 1895. An amateur theatre tradition was also established by 1934 at the latest; that year, the play Vörös haju was rehearsed. Together, these dates point to local cultural history beyond the church’s architectural history.
