Radzovce: Archaeology and Volcanic Landscape
Radzovce combines a distinctive volcanic landscape with significant archaeological traces and a diverse architectural heritage. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Slovakia with a protected landscape area, prehistoric history, and opportunities for culture and active recreation, Radzovce offers several different points of interest.
Landscape and volcanic formations near Radzovce
Radzovce lies in the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, on the floodplain and terrace of the Belina stream. The area consists of younger Tertiary sediments as well as volcanic tuffs and basalts. This geological foundation is visible in several landscape formations. The Monická-Lesostep is a protected area in Radzovce and adds another clearly defined landscape feature to the natural setting.
A prominent landmark is Monosa, a 584-metre-high volcanic cinder cone visible from the surrounding area. A four-kilometre-long lava flow extends northwest from Monosa. At the western edge of this lava flow, weathered rocks offer views into the Monosa Valley and over the settlement of Obručná. For visitors who want to experience geological formations not merely as a backdrop but as a tangible part of the landscape, this creates a particularly vivid focal point.
Archaeology and historical evidence
The archaeological site in Radzovce includes a cremation burial ground with 1,334 graves. It also contains traces of a Bronze Age settlement associated with the Piliny and Kyjatice cultures. A temporary exhibition on the archaeological site of Radzovce can be seen at the cultural history museum in Radzovce. At Monosa, a large cremation burial ground from the Middle to Late Bronze Age provides evidence of Celtic activity associated with the La Tène period. In Radzovce and Monosa, you can therefore encounter various archaeological indications of the landscape's long history of use.
Several historic buildings form part of the village landscape. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Radzovce dates from 1913. The preserved Art Nouveau manor house was remodelled at the beginning of the 20th century and has largely retained its Art Nouveau appearance to this day. It is a single-storey rectangular building with an octagonal corner tower. A second manor house in Radzovce was built in 1894 by Ferenc Vecsey. The architectural heritage is complemented by the Roman Catholic school building, which dates from 1760.
Obručná, viewpoints, and seasonal orientation
The settlement of Obručná was founded in 1914 by Slovak lumberjacks. A monument in Obručná commemorates the people who were killed there during a partisan battle in 1944. Above Obručná, a leisure centre offers opportunities for active recreation and sports. Obručná Leisure Centre has a swimming pool and offers the opportunity to hike to Pohanský vrch.
Throughout the summer season, Farma Cerovo is open daily to the public and all visitors. A nearby observation tower offers panoramic views of Mount Karanč and the municipalities of Čakanovce and Radzovce. For travel orientation, Radzovce has a railway stop and a bus stop.
