Gregorova Vieska: Culture at Sedem chotárov

Gregorova Vieska is a place for travellers who want to discover the landscape and traditional local culture. The municipality lies below Sedem chotárov on the southwestern edge of the Lučenec Basin. The bell tower of Gregorova Vieska, dating from 1723, is a cultural monument. A bell in the former wooden bell tower bears an inscription stating that it was cast by Gregor in 1223.

A documented theatre performance is also associated with Gregorova Vieska: On 4 May 1924, the play “Kubo” by J. Hollý was performed on the occasion of the consecration of the bells. The date and occasion make the performance a specific historical detail of the village’s history, not an indication of a current events programme.

The former school building of Gregorova Vieska contains a room called “Babinec”, furnished with period-style furniture and household items. The former school building also houses a library with more than 2,500 books. These rooms are particularly interesting for understanding the village because they preserve not only individual objects but also the character of a former everyday and educational environment.

The traditional folk culture of Gregorova Vieska included putting up maypoles, spinning evenings, feather-dancing or feather-plucking evenings, Carnival, the consecration of the bells on the first Sunday in September, and Christmas customs. From 1990, Libor Šimček had a workshop in Gregorova Vieska where he made and sold utilitarian ceramics. Beekeeping is also part of the local history: In the past, beehives were kept in the gardens, and beekeeping became increasingly popular there.
