Discover Točnica: Churches, Bell Tower and Cultural History

Točnica brings together several layers of Slovak cultural history with a protected stream and vibrant annual traditions. If you would like to get to know a place through specific evidence rather than general promises, here you will encounter churches from different periods, a wooden bell tower, memories of the poet Koloman Banšell and archaeological evidence of settlement dating far back into the past.

Churches, Bell Tower and Local Memory

Among the notable buildings is the Neoclassical Evangelical church from 1806. It houses an organ built in 1912 by Rieger Ottó – Budapest, which has been preserved without subsequent alterations. At the same time, this instrument is currently not functional. Thus, the church combines both its historic furnishings and a specific present-day limitation. Točnica is also home to a wooden bell tower built in 1791. According to the school chronicle, it was moved to its present location on wooden rollers in 1873. The former Evangelical school building from 1770 is one of Točnica’s cultural monuments. A newly built Catholic church dates from 2008. The town’s culture of remembrance also includes a memorial plaque for the poet Koloman Banšell, unveiled in 1969. Točnica is also his birthplace. The site’s prehistory can likewise be traced through named evidence. A hillfort of the Kyjatice culture from the Bronze Age was discovered in Točnica. In addition, Točnica is recorded as a settlement site of the Late Neolithic period dating to around 6,000 BC and as a settlement site of the Middle Eneolithic period dating to around 4,000 BC. The two settlement sites complement the Bronze Age hillfort with evidence from two further prehistoric periods.

Stream, Stork’s Nest and Craft Traditions

The Točnica stream flows through Točnica. Its meandering course, with remnants of an old oak forest, is designated as a protected natural feature because of its high biological and aesthetic value. The connection with nature remains closely linked to specific features: a stork’s nest on a post is considered an annual attraction in Točnica. The traditional local working world included wheelwrighting and cooperage. These traditional occupations of the inhabitants add a craft dimension to the history of the town alongside its architectural and archaeological evidence.

Annual Traditions and Events

Several recurring dates shape Točnica’s documented traditions. Every year, events are held for the raising and felling of the maypole, and a Midsummer bonfire also takes place. Another established feature is the annual goulash-cooking competition. In October, Točnica observes a Month of Appreciation for Older People. Alongside churches, monuments and settlement traces, these events place a distinct emphasis on community traditions.
