Sudince: Church, Winegrowing and the Súdovská Route

Sudince combines a preserved rural cultural landscape with the Súdovská trasa, which leads through the village between the Berený háj viewpoint and Lišov. This creates a destination where local history, folk architecture, winegrowing and a specific route for cross bikes come together within a compact thematic area.

Church and Folk Architecture in Sudince

The Protestant church in Sudince is a single-nave Late Classical building dating from 1858. Its presbytery has a segmental end, while the tower is integrated into the main structure. The façade is dominated by a risalit framed by pilasters, with a triangular gable and tympanum. A semicircular thermal window is located above the portal. The rest of the village also preserves tangible traces of the regional building tradition. Sudince has a preserved street settlement with folk houses; farmsteads, residential houses and small cottages display typical elements of Carpathian folk architecture. House No. 29 survives from an earlier settlement of stone houses dating from the 19th century in the Hont style. Those interested in the development of a village will therefore find not just a single religious building here, but several interconnected forms of the traditional settlement pattern. Sudince is documented as early as 1245 under the name Zyud. Later forms of the name were Usud from 1263, Wsudy from 1387 and Sudince from 1773. A linden tree approximately 500 years old adds to these historical traces in the village.

Sudinské močidlá and the Winegrowing Tradition

Among the special sights are the restored Sudinské močidlá. The site recalls customs that have disappeared from the lives of our ancestors. Until around 1952, hemp from the village and its surroundings was roasted in three stone-carved vats. Water from a warm spring was used for this purpose; the hemp was then prepared for the production of woven textiles. The Sudinské močidlá thus make visible a former craft process that is no longer part of everyday village life. Agriculture, livestock farming and winegrowing also shaped Sudince’s historic livelihoods. An alley with wine cellars and cottages leads towards the church. The village is one of the 13 winegrowing communities in the Hontiansky wine-growing district. This combination of wine cellars, cottages and traditional livelihood history gives the villagescape its own focus without reducing Sudince to winegrowing alone.

Cross-Country Cycling on the Súdovská Route

The Súdovská trasa runs through Sudince between the Berený háj viewpoint and Lišov. It follows both asphalt and unpaved forest and field roads and is intended for a cross bike. If you would like to visit Sudince along this route, turn right. After approximately 1 km, the village ends; to continue on the marked route, you must turn around and then return in order to carry on. The visit to the village is therefore integrated into the route as a detour rather than laid out as a straight passage through the village.
