Uňatín: Educational Trails, Mill and Village Culture

Uňatín lies in a flat valley along the Čekovský Stream, a tributary of the Krupinica. The village combines a tranquil river landscape with educational trails, a history of village architecture and crafts, and vibrant community traditions. This character is particularly evident along the Krupina–Uňatín–Čabraď educational trail, which connects Uňatín with Horný Badín, Čabradský Vrbovok and Čabraď Castle.

Educational Trails between Uňatín and the Krupinica

The Krupina–Uňatín–Čabraď educational trail is self-guided and can be walked in both directions. It can be used as a footpath year-round and is also suitable for bicycles along most of its route. The trail runs from Uňatín via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle. This means Uňatín can serve both as a starting point toward the castle and as a stopover on a longer route.

Alternative access routes lead from Krupina and Bzovík. Both meet in Uňatín, where the second section of the educational trail begins. This division of the routes provides a clear choice between different starting points without diminishing the village’s role as a connecting section.

A separate hiking option leads from Uňatín to “Uňatínsky mlyn” Mill. The route follows the meandering valley of the Krupinica to the mill and then returns to Uňatín along a circular route. This educational trail has four stations. The mill lies in the Krupinica floodplain; its courtyard contains a historic bread oven. The circular route thus combines the landscape, the course of the trail and a tangible testimony to earlier rural work.

Folk House, Mill and Crafts

The village itself also offers points of cultural and historical interest. The restored folk house is open to the public and preserves an original clay oven, an earthen floor, historic furnishings, an old well and a bread oven. These details reveal not only the house’s outward appearance but also different aspects of everyday life in the past.

The history of mills in Uňatín goes back further: the village’s first mill was built on the Krupinica River and belonged to the Premonstratensian monastery in Bzovík. Above Uňatín, there is also the Roman Catholic Church of Christ the King, dating from 1957.

Local culture also includes a craft heritage. In the first half of the 20th century, wooden implements and baskets were made in Uňatín. Embroidery, Hontian embroidery, bobbin lace and decorated Easter eggs were also produced. These various crafts reveal a diverse village production tradition that extends beyond a single craft.

Community Traditions Throughout the Year

Village life is shaped by several recurring customs and community events. Vatra is a long-standing annual community gathering in Uňatín. Earth Day has been a tradition here for more than 20 years, is also held annually and includes a joint litter-picking event in the area around the village.

The Maypole-raising ceremony has also returned to public life: Uňatín has revived this traditional custom and residents jointly erect a maypole in the village centre. Together with the restored folk house and traditional crafts, this creates a picture of a culture preserved not only in individual buildings but also practised as a community.

River Landscape and Protected Nature

The Krupinica valley is home to oak-hornbeam forests and springs. It also contains legally protected spring snowflakes.
