Bzovík Fortress: from Monastery to Fortification

Bzovík Fortress is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Slovakia. It was originally built around 1131 as a Benedictine monastery. Between 1530 and 1546, it was converted into a fortress with a high surrounding wall, four corner bastions and a moat.

For visits, Bzovík fortified monastery was available either without a guide or as a guided tour. Guided tours were possible on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., as well as on weekdays by prior arrangement; they lasted approximately 30 minutes. Church, Interior and Historical Details

A second cultural highlight is Kostol sv. Štefana kráľa. The church has late Gothic and early Renaissance characteristics and a Baroque interior. It was built in 1606 as an extension to an earlier chapel. The interior includes a main altar from 1762 and side altars from 1744. Next to the church is the Lourdes Grotto Jaskynka Lurdskej Panny Márie. In front of the Catholic church in Bzovík there is also a linden tree approximately 300 years old. These individual elements give the village setting several layers from different periods without requiring you to move between different locations.

Cycling on the Hontianska cyklomagistrála 011

The Hontianska cyklomagistrála 011 is a 50.8 km-long paved road cycling route of medium difficulty. It connects Krupina and Detva and runs through the Hont region. Its route begins at the ruins of the former Benedictine monastery above Bzovík, leads downhill into the village centre and then turns towards Krupina. The route therefore offers a clearly recognisable sequence of a historical starting point, the village centre and onward travel towards Krupina.

Educational Trail with Natural and Cultural History

Another way to experience the surroundings is the Krupina–Uňatín–Čabrad educational trail. It can be walked independently, follows a linear route and can be used in both directions. As an all-year-round hiking trail, it connects natural-history and cultural-history highlights. One variant begins at Bzovík railway station. This is particularly helpful if you do not want to start the hike exclusively from the fortress area but would like to consider the railway station as a starting point.
