Karpfen between urban history and nature experiences

A day trip to Karpfen can be planned around a visit to the museum, historic buildings and trails into nature. The character of the town is particularly evident in Krupina, where the history of literary figures, surviving traces of the town fortifications and striking landscape features come together. Depending on your interests, you can focus on culture, viewpoints or a hike to natural attractions.

Museum, literature and historic buildings

The Andrej Sládkovič Museum dedicates its permanent exhibition to the history of Krupina and literary figures. The focus is on the life and work of Andrej Sládkovič and Elena Maróthy-Šoltésová. The museum offers guided tours of the exhibition rooms, the cellars, and the permanent and temporary exhibitions. The cellar rooms, known as the Krupina underground vault, have been open during selected events since 2010. Following certain structural modifications, they can be visited as part of a guided tour of the museum exhibition.

The city walls also tell the story of the region. They were built between 1551 and 1564 from tuff quarried in the town's cadastral area. The Turkish Bastion has been used as a municipal amphitheatre since the 1970s and is now called “Amfiteáter Viliama Polónyiho”. Another important architectural landmark is Halmay House, built in 1906 for the senior district official.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary houses a late Gothic winged altarpiece of the Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles. The altar sculptures date from 1515 to 1520 and are attributed to the workshop of Master MS from Banská Štiavnica. The church therefore provides a distinct cultural and historical highlight alongside the museum and city fortifications.

Vartovka: A lookout tower with a historic character

Vartovka is a watchtower first mentioned in 1564 and the oldest surviving lookout tower in Slovakia. The tower was built of stone with a wooden gallery, reaching a height of approximately 13 metres. Vartovka is freely accessible and can be reached from the centre of Krupina via an approximately one-hour walk along a blue-marked trail.

After completing the tour at Malý rínok, you can continue along the educational trail to Vartovka. Štangarígeľ and the trail to the rocks

Another focus is the landscape. Štangarígeľ, also known as Krupinské bralce, is a national nature monument designated in 1975 in Krupina, covering an area of 0.69 hectares. It is characterised by regular five-sided andesite columns, some of which reach heights of up to 6 metres. The unusual shape of the rocks clearly distinguishes this natural site from the historic destinations in the town.

The Žibritov educational trail begins in the municipality of Žibritov by the former parish. It leads through the valley of the Bebrava stream to the imposing Štangarígeľ – Krupinské bralce rocks. Alongside the tour of literary sites, this provides a second documented route, focusing on the valley landscape and rock formations.
