Medovarce between Valley, Church and Historical Traces

Medovarce lies in the southern part of the Krupinská planina and initially reveals its character through the landscape: the village lies in a valley enclosed on all sides, through which the Krupinica flows within the municipality. The evangelical church, historic viticulture, the history of milling and traces of old routes offer different ways of approaching Medovarce.

A Landmark with Several Historical Layers

The evangelical church is a prominent landmark of Medovarce. It was built in 1832. Its furnishings include a Classical organ from 1820, built by an unknown master. The church also contains a late Gothic–Renaissance baptismal font made of hewn stone, dating from around 1500. Near the evangelical church stands a lime tree more than 500 years old.

These details make the church a place where different historical periods can be identified specifically: the year the church was built, the organ from the early 19th century, the considerably older baptismal font and the tree nearby. Wine, Honey and the History of Milling

Historic viticulture played an important role in Medovarce, with several varieties of own-rooted vines known as Samorodáky. Here, the term does not refer to a modern form of offering, but is part of the village’s traditional viticultural history. Another historical aspect of everyday life leads to Hont County: beekeeping was widespread there in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bees were also kept in Medovarce, and mead, or Medovina/Medovica, was made from honey.

The history of the village also includes the Pavol Hajnal water mill. It dates from the 19th century and has survived to this day with part of its original technical equipment. Medovarce is also documented as having a comparatively well-preserved privately owned water mill. The traces of milling thus add another aspect of historical use to the themes of church, wine and honey.

Historic Routes and a Warm Spring

The historic Zlatá cesta ran through a hollow way on the edge of Medovarce. A historic inn stood beside the Zlatá cesta. Both details belong to the older history of the village’s routes and point to a time when the combination of a route and a resting place played a role of its own.

There is also a warm spring on the main road towards Rykynčice, with a constant temperature of approximately 20°C. Alongside the historic buildings, economic activities and transport routes, it adds a nature-related accent to the description of Medovarce.
