Terany lies in a flat area at the transition between the Štiavnické vrchy, Krupinská planina and Ipeľská pahorkatina. Its location, cycling route 032 and the history of the former settlements of Dolné and Horné Terany offer different points of reference for getting to know the place as part of a trip to Slovakia.

Landscape and Location of Terany

The village lies at an elevation of 144 metres above sea level. The Štiavnička River also flows through Terany.

Climatically, the municipal area belongs to a warm zone with a moderately dry subclimate and mild winters.

Cycling on Route 032

Terany lies on cycling route 032, the Turčiansko–Kremnicko–Štiavnická cycling route. It runs from Dudince via Terany and Hontianske Tesáre to Svätý Anton.

The route passes through fields, meadows and villages, offering views of the surrounding landscape along the way. For cycling travellers, this is a practical way to discover Terany not only through its local history, but also through a route and the landscapes it passes through. If you are planning a ride, check local route conditions in advance; they can change.

Local History and Cultural Traces

Terany’s history includes early references to Horné and Dolné Terany. Horné Terany was mentioned in 1298 under the name TERYEN; Dolné Terany in 1387 as KYSTERIJEN. Terany was formed in 1944 by the merger of Dolné Terany and Horné Terany.

Historically, agriculture was the main livelihood in Terany; viticulture was also practised. Traditional dress also reflects the region’s cultural identity: it was a subvariant of the Lišov folk costume.

Another historical point of interest is the manor house in Terany. Construction began towards the end of the 19th century; the foundations appear to date from an earlier period. The Church of the Mercy of God offers another point of reference: construction began in 2002, and it was consecrated on 6 April 2013.

Road and Rail Transport

Road I/66/E77 passes through Terany, connecting Budapest with Warsaw. It was formerly also known as “Magna via.” The road therefore has both a current transport designation and a historical name. The transport network also includes railway line 119, which is currently used exclusively for freight. You should therefore not count on this line for passenger travel when planning your trip.

When choosing where to stay, you can consider Terany from these different perspectives: as a place on cycling route 032, in a flat area at the transition between three landscape regions, and with a history that stretches from the former settlements to their merger in 1944.
