Litava between sacred history and low mountain landscapes

Litava combines a concentrated sequence of historical monuments with a landscape setting within the Krupinská planina. Church, art and stone monuments

The focal point is the Roman Catholic Church in Litava, dedicated to Saint Margaret of Antioch. It stands partly on the foundations of a Romanesque chapel. A Gothic section was built on these foundations between 1320 and 1340. Its construction history therefore cannot be reduced to a single era: Romanesque foundations and Gothic extensions belong here to the same sacred building.

The church furnishings also offer specific historical details. They include a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 14th century with a Baroque wooden lid from the 18th century. There is also a late Baroque altarpiece of Saint Margaret. The oil painting on canvas dates from the end of the 18th century. A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the centre of Litava. The Calvary ensemble in Litava was built in 1807 in the folk Baroque style.
