Žibritov – Nature, Culture and Hiking Trails in Slovakia

Žibritov combines an educational trail through the Bebrava valley with historic buildings, signposted hiking and cycling routes, and a distinctive landscape of andesite rocks and vineyards. The village itself is characterized by preserved rural architecture and ecclesiastical monuments. The nearby area also offers natural attractions that give a stay different emphases, combining activity, culture and the experience of the landscape.

Hiking with Clearly Defined Route Features

The “Žibritovský náučný chodník” educational trail begins at the tourist trail junction in Žibritov and leads downhill through the Bebrava valley to Štangarígeľ. One seasonal restriction is important for planning: in summer, the educational trail cannot be walked along its entire length because pasture areas behind station 2 are fenced off. Anyone choosing this route should therefore bear in mind that the documented course is not fully accessible all year round.

Another specific hiking connection is the blue-marked trail from Žibritov to the memorial to forester Ing. Albert Macko below Buzalkový vrch. The route is 1.6 km long and has an elevation gain of 160 m. The memorial commemorates Ing. Albert Macko, who lived from 1951 to 2010.

Cycling between Žibritov and the Neighbouring Villages

The signposted cycling routes include the yellow-marked Sv. Anton–Žibritov route. A longer connection runs from Krupina via Štangarígeľ to Žibritov. This cycling route is 27.6 km long and runs mainly along paved forest roads marked with green cycling signs. The different markings and route lengths provide objective guidance when choosing between a connection from Sv. Anton and the route from Krupina.

Andesite Rocks, Vineyards and a Small Pond

The protected natural monument Sixova stráň is located near Krupinské bralce in the vicinity of Žibritov. It features a rare columnar jointing of pyroxene andesite into five- to six-sided columns whose upper parts are bent into hook-like shapes. The protected natural monument Krupinské bralce consists of a series of andesite columns with an adjoining scree slope.

The cultural landscape around the village also has its own agricultural character. Cultivated vineyards in Žibritov lie on the southern slope of Veinperg, also called Viničný vrch, above the valley of the Bebrava stream. The vines have roots that are more than 70 years old and are situated at an elevation of 460 to 485 m. A small pond near Žibritov is also suitable for a short rest.

Historic Villagescape and Film History

Žibritov has preserved an ensemble of traditional vernacular, masonry, single-storey houses with several rooms and rectangular floor plans. Several of these houses are listed as heritage monuments. The built heritage also includes a preserved cylindrical bastion, a remnant of the fortified medieval Church of St. Ladislaus. The bastion was later used as a bell tower.

The Protestant church in Žibritov is a Neoclassical building from 1838; the tower was built later. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Another historical connection arose in 1958: outdoor scenes for the first Slovak-Hungarian co-production film, “Dáždnik svätého Petra”, were shot in Žibritov and its surroundings.

Event and Regional Specialties

The regularly held event “Podsitnianske dni hojnosti” is listed in Žibritov for July. The summer folk festival takes place in Baďan, Prenčov, Žibritov or Kráľovce-Krnišov and offers traditional craft demonstrations as well as regional specialties. These include oven-baked homemade bread, Podymníky, Osúchy, yeast cakes, Pagáče, Lokše, Šúľance, Párance, Lekvárové buchty, wild boar goulash, homemade grilled sausages, suckling pig and homemade schnapps.
