Sebechleby: Folk Architecture, Wine and Culture

Sebechleby lies on the Krupinská planina plateau and combines a historically significant village centre with the wine-growing architecture of Stará Hora. The folk architecture reserve is part of Sebechleby. This gives the village several clearly distinct experiences to offer when planning your trip: you can view protected winegrowers’ houses and wine cellars, visit an ethnographic museum, explore sacred architecture or engage with wine and regional cuisine.

Stará Hora: Tuff-Stone Wine-Growing Architecture

The Stará Hora settlement contains approximately 130 winegrowers’ houses and wine cellars. Of these, 87 are classified as national cultural monuments. The protected folk architecture includes one- and two-room winegrowers’ houses with columned arcades, as well as cellars carved into the tuff stone. It is precisely this combination of residential form, arcaded walkway and cellar that makes Stará Hora a distinctive cultural and historical ensemble. The original wine cellars can be visited.

The Baroque Chapel of St. Urban in Stará Hora was built in 1732. The Sebechleby–Stará Hora Ethnographic Museum is part of the Stará Hora folk architecture reserve. It presents traditional costumes, folk traditions and customs passed down through generations. The idea for the small museum arose in 2003 to depict the former life and traditions of Sebechleby. The museum visit thus complements the buildings with the social and cultural background of the village.

Church of St. Michael and Older Traces

Another cultural site is located in Sebechleby itself: the Church of St. Michael belongs to the sacred architecture of the Baroque period and bears the property identification number 1112/1. Its interior has a single nave and ends in a polygonal presbytery. Gothic tracery from the 15th century has been preserved in the presbytery windows. The church also contains a Neoclassical organ dating from 1898. The church therefore brings together several historical layers, from the Gothic windows through the Baroque structure to the late 19th-century organ.

Wine, Guided Tours and Living Traditions

If you would like to get to know Stará Hora not only on your own, the tourist information centre offers information and guided-tour services in July and August. It can also arrange tastings and tours of the museum or the folk architecture reserve. A visit to the St. Urban Cellar includes a tasting of local wine together with a speciality of the typical cuisine.

Local events also highlight winemaking and everyday culture. Oberačka po sebechlebsky is a festival of winemaking, folk gastronomy, tourism and entertainment. The programme of Oberačka po Sebechlebsky 2025 included a tour of the tuff-stone cellars as well as tastings of varietal wines and burčiak. The Geľovianka folklore group is dedicated to the customs, songs, dances and costumes of Sebechleby and the Hont region. Its repertoire also includes grape processing and work in the vineyard. Together with the municipality and the local association, Geľovianka organises the Svätourbanské slávnosti in Stará Hora every year on the feast day of the patron saint of winemaking, St. Urban.

An example of the connection between community and tradition was the sports day in the Stará Hora folk architecture reserve, which concluded on 29 June 2024 with the lighting of the Jánska vatra bonfire.
